Title of the practice: Blood Donation

2. The context that required the initiation of the practice: (100-120 words): At
Marian college philanthropy is not a thing in itself but a means by which the college
as part of the larger society, tries to transform the lives of the marginalized and the
under privileged world by developing their students into responsible citizens.
“Champing a culture, from family replacement donors can and should occur’’. This
thought is one of the reasons behind the initiation of the blood donation camp in our
college.
3. Objective of the practice: (50-60 words): The blood is used to help a variety of
people. Donated blood can help restore a person’s blood volume after surgery,
accident or child birth. This also helps to improve the immunity of patients suffering
from leukaemia and other diseases. Blood donation helps to the students to understand
the needs of the society around and keep an open-eye to the social issues.

4. The practice: (250-300 words): To ensure that the nation’s blood supply is safe, each
donor is carefully screened to make sure he or she is in good health. At the donation
centre, a donor will be asked his /her name and address and this information will be
verified. His /her pulse, temperature and blood pressure are checked. The donor is
asked if he/she has ever had a condition that might disqualify him/her as a donor. If a
person’s blood pressure is too high or too low / if she is pregnant / if he/she has had
major surgery recently, then they are asked to wait for some more time before
donating. The person drawing the blood wraps tourniquet around the donor’s upper
arm by restricting the flow of blood returning from the hand to the heart. The person
drawing the blood inserts a needle into the vein. The needle is attained to allocating
bag. The donor lies still and quietly while the blood is collected, which takes only
about 10 minutes. When the unit or pint of blood is collected the needle is removed
and an adhesive bandage placed over the spot where the needle had been inserted. The
donor is asked to lie down still for a few moments and then offered fruit and juice.
The whole procedure lasts about an hour. The donated blood is sealed in a special
plastic bag containing substances that will keep it from clotting and will preserve it.
Refrigerated whole blood is usable for 42 days.

5. Obstacles faced if any an strategies adopted to overcome them: (150-200 words):

• Hepatitis, malaria, AIDS and most forms of cancer would make someone
unsuitable donor.

• The needle must be sterilised

• Fear which prevents from donating blood.

• Geographical obstacles
6. Impact of the practice: (100-200 words): It helped to create awareness about blood
donation. It helped to identify the rare group donors. It motivated the students to
donate their blood.

7. Resource required: Tie-up with hospitals.
