The Force That through the Green Fuse Drives the Flower” describes the cycle of birth and

death.
Explain.

Thomas tells his youth is about to see an end. He compares his youth with a beautiful
rose which implies probably his youth was full of joy, action and happiness. But that
beautiful rose is now about to fall down. The fuse/stem cannot hold up the weight of all
those beautiful days anymore.

“My youth is bent by the same wintry fever.”

In this line, “winter” symbolizes idleness, death, old age, pain and loneliness. And now
knows, he cannot delay death very much. It is unavoidable. Then Thomas surrenders his
youth to an end.

Thomas knows what force makes a person young man and what force makes a person
an old. The both force are basically the same. He realizes and understands that he is not the
alone who is going to die. Everyone is going to die eventually. Then he understands that rhe
rose with he compared himself earlier is also going to die. So he cannot find anything to
convey because he is scared and confused.

Thomas talks about a “force” that gets through the stem and makes a flower
blossom. He also says that the same “force” is the reason behind the death of the flower. He
does not know what exactly the force is but he is sure that the circle of life and death is
unbreakable and unchangeable. So death and live will remain forever. He finds out that the
force is actually “Time”. With the time, a man born, grows up and then dies. Time is
universal. Nothing is life if there is not time. So people cannot run away from it ever. In the
poem he mentions the name Charon. Greek mythology, Charon is a mini God whose job is to
ferry souls to the underworld to Hades (The god of underworld). (Probably he thinks souls
can take human form again and again. This is how the circle of life works)
Thomas probably mentions this to point what death is and what happens after death.
Thomas indicates that a living man transforms into a soul after his/her death. And a soul is
en energy & soul never dies. It is just conversion into a different entity which will not be
touched by time anymore.
