I. Define each of the following terms.

1. Reservoirs -​parts of the cycle where the chemical is held in large quantities for
long periods of time.

2. Evaporation - ​the reverse process in which liquid water becomes gaseous.

3. Condensation - ​the process by which water vapor changes its physical state
from a vapor, most commonly, to a liquid.

4. Interception - ​the process of interrupting the movement of water in the chain of


transportation events leading to streams.

5. Infiltration - ​the physical process involving movement of water through the


boundary area where the atmosphere interfaces with the soil.

6. Transpiration - ​the biological process that occurs mostly in the day.

7. Mycorrhizae - ​fungus which grows in association with the roots of a plant in a


symbiotic or mildly pathogenic relationship.

8. Phosphate - ​phosphorus atom with four oxygen atoms.

9. Biogeochemical Cycle - ​refers to the overall chemical cycles through both the
biological and the geological world.

10. Runoff -​a flow from a drainage basin or watershed that appears in surface
streams.
