Corona: Incidence values are being scrutinized

The medical officers in Berlin are calling for the fight against the corona pandemic to no longer just
look at the incidence values. It is not expedient to link containment measures to incidences of 20, 35
or 50, the Berlin newspaper "Tagesspiegel" quotes a statement from all twelve medical officers in
the capital. The doctors want instead to focus on infection prevention for the elderly and the sick in
order to be able to mitigate the measures for other groups such as school children. The head of the
Advisory Council in Health Care, which also advises Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn, argues in a
similar way.

The USA commemorates their 500,000 corona deaths

US President Joe Biden and his deputy Kamala Harris will commemorate the hundreds of thousands
of deaths in the corona pandemic this Monday. At sunset, Biden and Harris want to keep a minute's
silence with their spouses in the south portal of the White House, and candles are to be lit. A speech
by Biden in the White House is planned beforehand. The USA is likely to exceed the threshold of
500,000 corona deaths today. In no other country in the world are there known so many deaths in
connection with a SARS-CoV-2 infection.

EU seeks common line in dealing with Russia

The foreign ministers of the European Union are discussing sanctions against Russia this Monday for
dealing with the Kremlin critic Alexej Navalny. According to diplomats, the EU is threatening to
freeze accounts of allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin and to impose travel bans. Austria's
Foreign Minister Alexander Schellenberg said he expected a large majority in favor of sanctions.

Nuclear controllers remain in Iran for the time being

The International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA can continue its controls of the Iranian nuclear
program to a limited extent. An acceptable result had been achieved during his visit to Tehran, said
IAEA chief Rafael Grossi. The inspections are part of the 2015 nuclear deal designed to deter Iran
from building nuclear weapons. However, the US pulled out of the agreement in 2018 under then-
President Donald Trump. A year later, Iran began breaking the rules step by step.

Runoff election in Niger - citizens elect new president

In the terror-stricken West African country Niger, citizens voted in a runoff election for the next
president. Former President Mahamane Ousmane ran against former Foreign Minister Mohamed
Bazoum. Outgoing Head of State Mahamadou Issoufou said this was a big day for Niger. For the first
time in its history there is a democratic change. Results of the election are expected earlier this
week.

US authorities have Boeing 777 tested

After the fire of an engine on a United Airlines passenger plane, the US aviation authority (FAA)
ordered investigations into Boeing 777s. After the fire in the Boeing engine, aircraft parts crashed
into a residential area near the US city of Denver on Saturday. The passenger plane had to make an
emergency landing shortly after take-off. Nobody got hurt.
Hertha BSC Berlin again without a win

Hertha BSC Berlin suffered another defeat in the Bundesliga. The Berliners lost against Leipzig with 0
to 3. Augsburg and Leverkusen drew 1 to 1. Hoffenheim prevailed against Bremen 4-0.
