STREET ART & GRAFFITI

Street Art, is the form of art which started during the 1920’s and saw its boom in
1970’s and 1980’s in New York, US. Initially it originated with tagging, or
scratching names on public property. Sometimes deeply rooted in the
revolutionary practices of various subcultures of class, race, or gender.
Street art is usually displayed in public on surrounding buildings, on streets,
trains, and on other publicly viewed surfaces. Many instances come in the form
of guerrilla art, which is to make a personal statement about the society.
This form of art has moved from graffiti and vandalism to new modes where
artists work to bring messages to an audience. Street art is mainly created in
public spaces and usually describes a strong political or social message, many of
them have the messages hidden inside the artwork itself.
The basis of street art is that it usually includes images, illustrations, or symbols
that are meant to convey a message. The main reason street art is so
popularized is because the messages shown are usually made to be
understandable to all. So, it helps to bring it to positive light in the public eye
regardless of their personal taste in art.
Street art is historically linked to breaking from traditional practices in terms of
medium, surface or artistic styles. Graffiti, a form of Street art mainly made up of
written words that are meant to represent a group in a secret way and in plain
sight. Artists often incorporate elements like adding large bubble lettering or
smaller decorative script. Scale and time are often important factors because
many of these works are created illegally. Many artists use spray paint and
stencils to paint large surfaces, like walls, in a short amount of time.
In the beginning, graffiti was the only form
of street art that there was and it was
widely considered to be a illegal act of
territorial marking and rude messaging.
Initially, there was very clear divisions
between the work of a street artist and the
act of tagging a public or private property,
but in recent years where the difference
between these two art forms have merged
together and now it’s very hard to
distinguish between these two forms of
arts. Those who truly appreciate the work
of famed street artists or street works of
art, are in acceptance of the fact that this
art would not be the same without the
medium being the street.
Some similarities between graffiti and
street art are works of art that are created
with the same intent. Most artists, whether
they are working anonymously, creating an
intentionally sarcastic message, or fighting
for some greater cause are working with
the same ambitions for popularity,
recognition, and the public display or
display of their personal thoughts,
feelings, and passions.
Street art gives a medium freely
expressing a sensitive topic which maybe
against the current political corruption
without the risk of getting caught. And the
media it self further increases the reach of
the slogan or art because of it being public
and easily available. Its very effective to
build up a movement against corruption
Artists may also appreciate the challenges and risks that are associated
with installing illegal artwork in public places. A common motive is that
creating art in a format which utilizes public space allows artists to have
a blank canvas with no price tag to reach a much broader audience than
other galleries would allow.
Some street artists have earned international attention for their work
and have made a full transition from street art into the mainstream art
world — some while continuing to produce art on the streets.
Street art has received artistic recognition with the high-profile status
of Banksy and other artists. This has led street art to become one of the
sights to see in many European cities. Berlin, London, Paris, Hamburg
and other cities all have popular street art tours running all year round.
The works are subject to whatever change or destruction may come due
to the fact that they are created on public or private surfaces which are
neither owned by the artist or permitted to be worked on by the property
owners. This acceptance of the potential impermanence of the works of
art and the public placement of the illegal works are what contribute to
the meaning of the piece and therefore, what helps the growth of street
art popularity.
Many street artists claim we do not live in a museum so art should be in
public with no tickets and free for display.

Although street art is mainly a kind of artistic expression, it has seen an

evolution and diversity of street art.
For example, stencils have been a part of history to graffiti for political
activism. The evolution of street art became evident through such
artists as Banksy. With the introduction of more young artists street art
became a ground for experimenting with different kinds of methods, but
never giving up on its rebellious position in front of the patterns and
structures of popular culture and mass media reality.
Street Art & Louis Vuitton
Louis Vuitton has teamed up with international street artists Kenny Scharf,
André Saraiva and INTI for the ‘Artist Scarf’. Each street artist has created his
own Louis Vuitton Artist Scarf depicting the signature style.
André painted his famous Mr. A figurine on the Louis Vuitton scarf. The colors
André used are blue and red. The background is sprinkled with color dots that
remind of Pollock.
INTI designed the silk scarf with a red, yellow and orange Aztec face we have
seen in his murals.
Kenny Scharf’s Louis Vuitton scarf is artistically the most elaborate with its
universe theme. It shows planets, spaceships, tires, a space girl as well as the
yin & yang sign.
