DC Motors (One third of the total mark)

Two professors, let’s call them prof. Weldeslassie and prof. Geurts, are using
the same DC motor in the same application. The motor is equipped with stator
coils and can be used both in an independently excited as well as in a shunt
excited set-up. For this motor, the following values are given:

Unom, stator = Unom, rotor = 250 V

Knom = 0.173 V s
Rr = 1/3 Ω
Rs = 300 Ω
Tfric = 0.33 N m

The load is also rotating. The load torque consists of a constant friction torque
of 10 Nm and a friction torque that is proportional to the load velocity, equaling
0.018ωL in size.

There is a transmission in between the motor shaft and the load with a trans-
mission ratio of 1:4 and an efficiency of 80%.

The desired load speed in the operating point equals 275 rad/s. Prof. Weldeslassie
uses independent excitation with the nominal voltage applied to the stator coils.
Prof. Geurts uses shunt excitation.

Questions:

(a) What is the terminal (or rotor) voltage prof. Weldeslassie needs to apply?
What is the voltage prof. Geurts needs to apply?

(b) Draw the motor and the load characteristics at the motor side on one of the
graphs at the back of this page for
i- the case where the nominal voltage is applied to both stator and rotor termi-
nals;
ii - prof. Weldeslassies’ situation;
iii- prof. Geurts’ situation.

(c) Which professor obtains the highest overall (or total) efficiency? (Also take
into account stator losses).
