363 Event Design Homework

The first event that I think is a creative solution to create a sensorial experience is actually a
place I used to work at. I used to work at a farm in Round Hill, Virginia called East Lynn Farm and part of
the farm was used as a wedding venue. The real magic though is where the service was held. There is a
big old barn on the property that has two floors. The bottom floor used to be used as a place where
cows (presumably) would go into metal gates that hold their heads in place where they would get
milked. Now, the whole barn has been transformed into a wonderful place to have a wedding and I had
the opportunity to be able to help set up for multiple weddings. The bottom floor of the barn held some
cool, old, wooden tables with a lot of plants and decorations as like a hangout spot. The upper floor was
where the dinner and fancier stuff took place. I would help set up all the tables and chairs and
decorations and even put a dance floor in. I feel like this best practice enhances entertainment,
aesthetics, and escapism. Entertainment because it’s a wedding venue in which there is music, dancing,
and games outside on the grass. Aesthetics because they’re able to turn an old, unused barn into a
beautiful useful area for weddings. I also feel like it can be a bit of escapism because of the fact that
Northern Virginia is mainly suburban with a lot of people, cars, and noise but out on East Lynn Farm it
almost seems like you’re in another state.

The next event I think is a creative solution to create a sensorial experience is the Radford
Highlanders Festival. Entertainment because of all the activities that go on like music and a bunch of
different field games. Escapism because I feel like the festival is like a throwback to past times where
people dress up and play traditional games that used to be played and its like a throw back in time. Also
I would say its educational because people get to see and learn how traditional families were along with
traditional music from back in the day.
A third event that I’ve been to before that I think is a creative solution to create a sensorial
experience is a Fall Pumpkin Harvest Festival at a farm called Great Country Farms in Bluemont, Virginia.
This event is great for entertainment because its on a big farm that does a lot of stuff. Obviously you’d
be picking pumpkins during this event but there’s a lot little games, animals you can ride ,and a lot of
other stuff to do. I also feel this would apply to escapism because it would be a fun day trip for a family
to go and relax and have fun and get away from school and work.
