Vice Vaccines: Prevention x Treatment

Three decades ago a vaccine that made monkeys immune to a heroin high was developed.
News of the research reached many continents, and distraught parents, who didn’t want their
children to become heroin addicts, pleaded with scientists to immunize their offspring. Such
pleas put the scientists off pursuing the vaccine and they dropped the research altogether. I think
it's not clear here why the pleas made the scientists drop the research
Vaccines against addictive substances such as cocaine and nicotine are back now, and so
is the debate. This time, concerns stem from the fact that these shots could fight pleasures people
cherish in spite of their dangers, which has brought about issues of personal choice.
Trials have already been launched, but no conclusive evidence has come about as for
whether the shots work fully or not. That is possibly due to the fact that recovering addicts would
have to be exposed to either nicotine or cocaine some time during the treatment, which is
unethical.
Even if these trials pan out, it will be years before vice vaccines hit the market. They
will, however, eventually be embraced by institutions struggling with drug abuse and parents
whose intention is to have their children vaccinated as a preventive measure.
While the current vaccines can’t guarantee clean living, they might just represent a step
toward a future when people end up as slaves to virtue rather than vice.

Mozar,
I think this is very clear. I can't think of any other phrasal verbs to add unless we stick in sth about addicts
giving up nicotine/cocaine..
IF students are going to use this article for discussion, I think there are 2 places we could give more
details--the types of institutions fighting drug abuse (ex. schools, prisons) and the fact that the vaccine
may eventually work better for treatment than prevention.
