Exercise 5

Your school recently organised a ‘work experience week’, when each student in your class spent the
week working in a local business of their choice.

Write an email to your friend about your work experience week.

In your email, you should:

• explain which type of business you worked in

• describe what you had to do each day

• say how this has helped you with your career plans

The pictures above may give you some ideas, and you can also use some ideas of your own.

Your email should be between 150 and 200 words long.

You will receive up to 8 marks for the content of your email, and up to 8 marks for the language
used.

A STAR MODEL ANSWER

Dear Evelynn,

Remember the work experience week I was rambling about? Yes, it finally happened! Let me fill you
in with all the gory details.

My emotional scale was on a rollercoaster all week long, from jittery to joy until I got to work at the
local veterinary hospital (thanks a bunch, lucky stars!) And no, you didn’t read wrong! The ‘zoologist’
was a legit vet for a week at the Nashville branch of National Animal Care (Unbelievable! I know,
right?)

Everything wasn’t as gratifying, though. My day usually started with me bringing a Starbuck’s coffee
for our nice but get-on-my-nerves-and-I’ll-dissect you head-doctor. There were occasional stitches
and low-key operations I helped in, but mostly I just ‘puppy-sat’ the adorable litter. The highlight,
unsurprisingly, was where my bucket-list finally got completed - I got to patch up a wounded dog all
by myself. It was totally a dream come true. And when the doctor declared the procedure successful,
I nearly did a happy dance then and there.

Other than spicing up my whole summer, the work-experience-week did get me enough credits to
apply for (drumrolls) Washington College for Veterinary. Believe me! I couldn’t be happier. And as if
that’s not enough, I now needn’t to worry about that awful mandatory experience section in the job
applications, not to mention the zestful person the week carved out from the sloth that I was.

So, that’s enough bragging for now. Check out the pictures I attached.

Cheerio,

Nafha
