Effects
Reverb
Anothe r important factor whe n de te rm ining the appropriate le ve ls for your Be ats and Vocals
is the amount of re ve rb that you have on your vocals.

Re ve rb is an e ffe ct that give s a Vocal its se nse of space and cre ates the effe ct of a singe r is
singing in a bathroom, or cathe dral, or sm all jazz club for exam ple .

W he n used in the right amounts, re ve rb can e nhance your Vocal takes and give them polish
and shine that will bring your entire song up a notch.

If too m uch re ve rb is pre sent howe ve r, your re cording can sound clutte red, less punchy and
washed out, sim ilar to listening to m usic through a ste reo in the m iddle of a gymnasium .

The T-Pain Engine can add Small, Me dium , Large or No re ve rb to your Vocal 1 and 2 tracks.
This can be se t inside of your T-Pain Engine Pre fe rences window.

By default, The T-Pain Engine will add the Small re ve rb se tting to your Vocal track s.

The "corre ct" amount will depe nd upon the particular style of vocals you are work ing with
and how you want those vocals to sound with re spe ct to the style of your Be ats.

A good starting point is to begin with the Small se tting, and to ex pe rime nt with Me dium ,
then Large , and then No re ve rb to see which se tting mak es your vocals sound the be st.

Tips & Tricks

Mix ing
The goal of your m ix is to se t the volume of your individual tracks so that it will be pleasing
for anyone to liste n to. This also includes making sure that your ove rall m ix is not so loud
that it is painful for some one to listen to, but also not so quie t that it doe sn't fee l lik e a
satisfying pie ce of m usic.

You can start by ge tting your track volume s at the rough le ve ls that you'd like them, and
then m ak ing small volum e adjustme nts late r to each track to fine tune your song.

Beats vs. Vocals

In most cases, your Vocal tracks should be slightly loude r than your Beat track so that any
liste ne r can clearly hear your re corded vocals.

If your Vocal take s are too low with re spe ct to your Beat, it can be difficult for the listene r to
make out the words of your Vocals and the de tail in your re cording can ge t swallowe d by
the Beat track .

If your Vocal take s are too loud howe ve r, your track can be unpleasant to liste n to and can
make your Vocals sound too separate from your Beat. This can also make your ove rall track
fee l lik e two separate pie ce s of m usic as oppose d to one cohesive song.

At the same time , you want to make sure that your Beats are loud enough that the y can
provide a backdrop and foundation for the vocal tak es to sit on.

W ith som e e xpe rimentation, you can find the right balance be twe e n the volume of your
Be ats and Vocals so that the y work we ll toge the r and allow a listene r to clearly he ar both
your Beat as we ll as your Vocals.

Tip: If you're having trouble finding the right balance , try listening to a diffe re nt song that
you like the sound of that is sim ilar to your own track . Take notice of how loud the vocals
are with respe ct to the instrume nts and use this as a guide in se tting your own Beat and
Vocal le ve ls.

Background Voca ls
If one of your Vocal tak es contains back ground vocal re cordings, it is im portant to se t the
volume and re ve rb le ve l of your vocals accordingly.

Background vocals should be loud e nough that the y can be heard and enhance your song,
howe ve r not loud enough to distract the liste ne r from the lead vocal re cording.

You can also expe rime nt with se tting the Vocal track containing your background vocals to
e ithe r a Medium or Large re ve rb se tting. This can often he lp to place them into the corre ct
position in your m ix to fill their role as background vocals.

Individual Parts
If you have cre ated or re corded a particular Beat or Vocal tak e that you would like to ex port
as an individual audio file , use the Mute buttons to sile nce the tracks you don't want to
hear.

O n windows, one of the most common plug-in format for hosts is called the VST format.

If your VST plug-in is not available in a VST hostapp, the re are a fe w things we can che ck :

- Some hosts m ight not show ne wly-installed plug-ins until the ir plug-in lists are manually
"re freshed." This is som e times the case in hosts such as C ake walk SO NAR , FL Studio and
Adobe Audition, and the re should be an option within the host to trigge r a manual re fresh.

- Your VST plug-in's .DLL file may not be pre sent, or its location may not be re cognized by
your VST host app. To fix this proble m:

1. To be gin, please close any ope n VST host apps.

2. Use the W indows Search option to locate the VST plug-in file s on your syste m.

The re will be two files that ne ed to stay toge the r in the same folde r.

5. If you locate the plug-in's .DLL file , please note its location on your system .

In most cases, your VST plug-ins are installe d to your system 's VST folde r, typically:

C :\\Program File s\Ste inbe rg\Vstplugins

6. O nce you k now the location of your plug-in file, please re -open your host app. Among
your host's prefe re nce s, it should include a list of VST plug-in folde rs it re cognizes. Ple ase
make sure that the full path (or location) of your VST plug-in appears in this list.

Mac intosh OS X
O n Macintosh systems, one of the most comm on plug-in formats is called the AudioUnit
(AU) form at. This is the format use d by Garageband and Logic and many othe r Macintosh
audio host applications.

If you are having trouble ge tting The T-Pain Effe ct plug-in to show up in your host, the re
are a fe w ste ps we can try.

1. For the plug-in to function corre ctly, the AU compone nt file m ust be installe d to a spe cific
location on your syste m drive .

Navigate to the folde r be low and look for a file named

"iZTPainEffe ctAUHook .compone nt"

Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Compone nts

2. If the plug-in file is prese nt the re , it's possible your ope rating system failed to de te ct it.
Try moving the file e lse whe re , re starting your system , the n moving the file back , and
re starting again.

3. If your plug-in's com ponent file is not the re, use Spotlight on your Mac to do a se arch for

Patterns

A part (also called a 'track Part') is a colle ction of 64 ste ps that each re prese nt a six ty-
fourth note in a single bar of 4/4 time. By default, iDrum displays six tee nth note s for a
single bar, but you can e dit 32nd and 64th note s by using the step vie w control at the top of
the UI.

Looking at the iDrum ste p programme r with the de fault '16' step re solution se t, the first
step would be the downbeat, "one ", the fifth step, "two", and so on.

A classic "four-on-the -floor" patte rn would look lik e this:

Straight e ighth note s would look like this:

Parts also store the re lative volume of each step, so a groovy "off-beat" hat part with
acce nts on the "and" of each beat would look like this:

You e dit a part by click ing on a step to toggle it on or off. W he n a step is active , it appears
'lit up'. An inactive step appe ars 'gre ye d out'. W hen a step is inactive , that ste p is not
sounded re gardle ss of any othe r se ttings for the part.

W he n a step is active , you can change the volume of the step by click ing on the ste p,
holding down the mouse button, and dragging up or down. A step with its volume at ze ro
has the same e ffe ct as an inactive step: no sample is trigge re d for that step.

Record a Pattern
As we mentioned, you can create or change drum patte rns by turning off the re ctangular
"steps" in iDrum 's inte rface. Howe ve r, the re is a se cond option for mak ing patte rns--you
can re cord them from a MIDI controlle r or e ve n your com pute r ke yboard.

Enable the R e cord button in iDrum , and as you play notes on your MIDI or com pute r
ke yboard iDrum will capture them into your patte rn.

Computer (QWER TY ) Keyboa rd

Using the le tte rs in the se cond row (be ginning with "A") on your compute r k e yboard, you
can trigge r each of iDrum 's tracks. "A" corresponds to the first track in iDrum , S the se cond,
and so on down the row.

MIDI Keyboard
iDrum 's track s respond to MIDI note s. This m eans you can use a MIDI k e yboard or pad
controlle r to play and re cord patte rns in iDrum . You can also reassign e ach of iDrum 's track s
to respond to any MIDI note you want. Se e the "C hange Trigge r Note " topic in this he lp file
for de tails.

Quantize Input
You can te ll iDrum to corre ct your timing as you re cord patte rns by using the Q uantize Input
se ttings in the iDrum m enu. This feature will autom atically adjust the rhythm of the note s
you play to fit into iDrum 's grid, e ve n if your tim ing isn't pe rfe ct.
For most situations, try se tting input quantize to 16th note s or 8th notes - the se are the
most forgiving se ttings. If you want notes to be captured more pre cise ly, try the 32nd or
64th note se ttings.
