Contractions in English

The following can be contracted in English

am 'm (after 1)

is 's (after he she it)

is not isn't

are 're (after you, we, they)

are not aren't

have 've (only if auxiliary, not possession) (must be followed by something)

have not haven't

has 's (only if auxiliary, not possession) (must be followed by something)

has not hasn't

had 'd (only if auxiliary, not possession) (must be followed by something)

had not hadn't

would 'd (must be followed by something)

would not wouldn't

will 'II (must be followed by something)

will not won't (must be followed by something)

should not shouldn't

must not mustn't

might not mightn't

cannot * can't (*note, we don't right 'can not', we write cannot)

The following should NOT be contracted: am not may not

ought not (it Is sometimes seen)

ALSO NOTE:
If you contract a subject with a verb (have or be) then you cannot contract the "NOT" to "n"'t in the
negative

You can say, for example: "You're not" OR "You aren't" BUT you can't say "You'ren't
