Chapter 1-8

Word- Craning
Meaning- stretch out one's body or neck in order to see something.
Contextual Sentence- Mrs. Dursley was thin and blonde and had nearly twice the usual amount
of neck, which came in very useful as she spent so much of her time craning over the garden
fences, spying on the neighbors.
Sentence construction- Police craned forward to reach robbery scene

Word- Shuddered
Meaning-to shake suddenly with very small movements because of a very unpleasant thought or
feeling
Contextual Sentence- The Dursleys shuddered to think what the neighbors would say if potters
arrived in the street.
Sentence Construction- I was shuddered after listening incident happened across the road.

Word- Rooted to the spot


Meaning- Not moving
Contextual Sentence- Mr. Dursley stood rooted to the spot
Sentence Construction- When the truck bore down on dog the boy got terrified and stood rooted
the spot.

Word- Swooped
Meaning-(especially of a bird) move rapidly downwards through the air.
Contextual Sentence- He didn’t see the owl swooping the past in board daylight, though people
down in the street did.
Sentence Construction- The eagle swooped up after catching its prey.

Word- downright
Meaning- so direct in manner as to be blunt
Contextual Sentence- People are being downright careless, out on the streets in broad daylight,
not even dressed in Muggle clothes, swapping rumors.
Sentence Construction- I couldn’t stand Ali downright behavior.

Word- exasperated
Meaning- intensely irritated and frustrated.
Contextual Sentence- "I know you haven’t, said Professor McGonagall, sounding half exasperated,
half admiring.
Sentence Construction- Zain gave exasperated vibe after working all day alone.

Word-prodded
Meaning-poke with a finger, foot, or pointed object.
Contextual Sentence-Dursley's scream as she opened the front door to put out the milk bottles,
nor that he would spend the next few weeks being prodded and pinched by his cousin Dudley...
Sentence Construction- women were being prodded after the protest
Word-rummaging
Meaning-search unsystematically and untidily through something.
Contextual Sentence-There was a sudden rummaging for quills and parchment
Sentence Construction- I was rummaging my anatomy notes at last moment.

Meaning-someone or something that moved closely and slowly along the ground.
Contextual Sentence-. The sun rose on the same tidy front gardens and lit up the brass number

Meaning- to cover something
Contextual Sentence- Uncle Vernon rapped the glass smartly with his knuckles, but the snake just
snoozed on.
Sentence Construction- we should rap our staff while shifting places.

Meaning-disorder or disarrange
Contextual Sentence-- a real, live, rather ruffled-looking owl -- a long quill, and a roll of parchment
Sentence Construction-Bridal hair got ruffled because of rain.

Word-sniggered,
Meaning-laugh in a half-suppressed, typically scornful way
Contextual Sentence-Draco Malfoy and his friends Crabbe and Goyle sniggered behind their hand.
Sentence Construction-the boys at school were sure to snigger at him behind his back "

Word-maniacs
Meaning-person exhibiting extremely wild or violent behaviour.
Contextual Sentence-"... roaring along like maniacs, the young hoodlums," he said, as a
motorcycle overtook them.
Sentence -when he sits in front of a PlayStation he transforms into a karate-choppin' maniac.

Word-glistening,
Meaning-shining with a sparkling light.
Contextual Sentence-Dudley stood with his nose pressed against the glass, staring at the glistening
brown coils.
Sentence Construction-sand on beach was glistening on sunny day.

Word-deafening
Meaning- so loud as to make it impossible to hear anything else.
Contextual Sentence-As the snake shook its head, a deafening shout behind Harry made both of
them jump.
Sentence Construction-Night clubs have deafening music all the night.

Word-slithering
Meaning-move smoothly over a surface with a twisting or oscillating motion.
Contextual Sentence-The great snake was uncoiling itself rapidly, slithering out onto the floor.
Sentence Construction- Man slithered down from highest mountain and found

Word-knickerbockers
Meaning-loose-fitting breeches gathered at the knee or calf.
Contextual Sentence-As he looked at Dudley in his new knickerbockers, Uncle Vernon said gruffly
that it was the proudest moment of his life.

Word-gruffly
Meaning- rough or surly in manner, speech

Meaning-break suddenly and completely, typically with a sharp cracking sound.

Word- twanging,
Meaning-make or cause to make a twang.
Contextual Sentence-Harry picked it up and stared at it, his heart twanging like a giant elastic
band.
Sentence Construction- my heart was twanging when I submitted my paper.

Word-dodged
Meaning-avoid (someone or something) by a sudden quick movement
Contextual Sentence-It was as Harry dodged another Bludger, which went spinning dangerously
past his head, which it happened.
Sentence Construction- you should dodge the people who create negative vibe around you

Word-quivering,
Meaning-trembling or shaking with a slight rapid motion.
Contextual Sentence-Snape was still ignoring Hermione's quivering hand.
Sentence Construction- Amna was so nervous that she couldn’t drink water properly with her
quivering motion.

Word-gasping for breath


Meaning,-To gasp or pant heavily due to having difficulty breathing
Contextual Sentence-Then, cold, wet, and gasping for breath, they returned to the fire in the
Gryffindor common room,
Sentence Construction- runners stood to grasp for the breath after the race.

Word-pelt out
Meaning-hurl missiles repeatedly at.
Contextual Sentence-. He would drop wastepaper baskets on your head, pull rugs from under
your feet, pelt you with bits of chalk,
Sentence Construction-she wittiness two boys who pelted out the stone on ducks.
Word- pace up and down
Meaning-To walk back and forth (in or around some place), as in fear, anger, anxiety, frustration
Contextual Sentence-He paced up and down in front of the fire
Sentence Construction- Student were paced up and down before the result in student hall.

Word-skidding
Meaning-slide, typically sideways or obliquely, on slippery ground or as a result of stopping or
turning too quickly.
Contextual Sentence-There was a crash behind them and Uncle Vernon came skidding into the
room.
Sentence Construction- his bike skidded on slippery road and fell down badly.

Word- squeaked
Meaning-make a high-pitched sound or cry.
Contextual Sentence-Dudley squeaked and ran to hide behind his mother, who was crouching,
terrified, behind Uncle Vernon.
Sentence Construction-Baby squeaked when he got injection.

Word-fidgeted
Meaning-make small movements, especially of the hands and feet, through nervousness or
impatience.
Contextual Sentence-. Nobody said a thing while the giant was working, but as he slid the first six
fat, juicy, slightly burnt 37 sausages from the poker, Dudley fidgeted a little
Sentence Construction- “Stop fidgeting” teacher yelled at student.

Word- gasp of horror


Meaning-a sudden, short intake of breath, as in shock or surprise
Contextual Sentence-Aunt Petunia gave a gasp of horror.
Sentence Construction- Mum gave gasp of horror when we woke up late at morning.-

Word-scuttled back
Meaning-intransitive to run somewhere with short quick steps
Contextual Sentence-CAR CRASH!" roared Hagrid, jumping up so angrily that the Dursleys scuttled
back to their corner.
Sentence Construction- Bullies scuttled back when they was teacher coming.

Word-shuddered
Meaning-tremble convulsively, typically as a result of fear.
Contextual Sentence-"Nah -can't spell it. All right -- Voldemort. " Hagrid shuddered.
Sentence Construction-he still shuddered at the thought of her.

Word-swishing down
Meaning-move quickly through the air making a soft sound
Contextual Sentence-. He raised the wand above his head, brought it swishing down through the
dusty air and a stream of red and gold sparks shot from the end like a firework,
Sentence Construction- Robber swished down the house when police came to investigate.

Word-twitching
Meaning-give or cause to give a short, sudden jerking or convulsive movement.
Contextual Sentence-Three pairs of rolling, mad eyes; three noses, twitching

Meaning-to move with a sweep

Meaning-a roof in the form of an arch or a series of arches, typical of churches and other large,
formal buildings.
Contextual Sentence-They say there's dragons guardin' the highsecurity vaults.
Sentence Construction- Old Mughal mosque have huge and beautiful vaults.

Word-goblin
Meaning-a mischievous, ugly creature resembling a dwarf.
Contextual Sentence-The goblin was about a head shorter than Harry
Sentence Construction- Goblin is one of popular fantasy character in movies and dramas of Korea.

Word-bump into
Meaning-to meet someone unexpectedly.
Contextual Sentence-At this moment the boat bumped gently into the harbor wall.
Sentence Construction- I accidentally bump into my first love.

Meaning-full of activity
Contextual Sentence-full of activity
Sentence Construction- University ground was bustling at spring fest.

Word-coming to a halt
Meaning-to no longer move or happen 
Contextual Sentence-"This is it," said Hagrid, coming to a halt, "the Leaky Cauldron. It's a famous
place.
Sentence Construction- Online classes came to a halt.

Word-transfiguration
Meaning-a complete change of form or appearance into a more beautiful 
Contextual Sentence-. A little more power and excellent for transfiguration.
Sentence Construction- Zahra’s transfiguration was mouth dropping on her wedding.

Meaning- left aground on a shore.
Contextual Sentence- he was stranded in the middle of a station with a trunk he could hardly lift, a
pocket full of wizard money, and a large owl.
Sentence Construction- I was offered to a stranded commuter.

Word- gangling
Meaning-tall, thin, and awkward in movements or bearing.
Contextual Sentence-He was tall, thin, and gangling, with freckles, big hands and feet, and a long
nose.
Sentence Construction- Her gangling made everyone stare her.

Word-dreadlock
Meaning-a Rastafarian hairstyle in which the hair is washed but not combed.
Contextual Sentence-A boy with dreadlocks was surrounded by a small crowd.
Sentence Construction- That dreadlocks guy cheated on her.

Meaning-push, elbow, or bump against (someone) roughly, typically in a crowd.
Contextual Sentence-. People jostled him on their way to platforms nine and ten.
Sentence Construction- Everyone was jostled while entering bus as groups.

Word-lingered
Meaning- stay in a place longer than necessary because of a reluctance to leave.
Contextual Sentence-Her eyes lingered for a moment on Neville's cloak, which was fastened under
his left ear, and on Ron's smudged nose.
Sentence Construction- Grandma lingered in the yard, enjoying the warm sunshine.

Word- Dormitory
Meaning-a large bedroom for a number of people in a school or institution
Contextual Sentence-Percy directed the girls through one door to their dormitory and the boys
through another.
Sentence Construction- Fresher have already moved in dormitories.

Word-flickering
Meaning-burning or shining unsteadily
Contextual Sentence-It filled the whole damp hut with flickering light and Harry felt the warmth
wash over him as though he'd sunk into a hot bath.
Sentence Construction- Children loved the flickering light came from crackers.

Meaning-shout something with a deep loud roar.
Contextual Sentence-"STUDENTS OUT OF BED!" Peeves bellowed, "STUDENTS OUT OF BED DOWN
THE CHARMS CORRIDOR"
Sentence Construction- he bellowed out the order to his sectary.

Word- grubby
Meaning-covered with dirt; grimy.
Contextual Sentence-Hagrid had emptied vault seven hundred and thirteen, if you could call it
emptying, taking out that grubby little package.
