It is because these complexes are very much labile. Thus, it is not possible to isolate optically active compound. — — Co-ordination number 6. In an octahedral complex, optical 8 isomerism should be possible, if there are six different unidentate \ \ ligands, a, b, ¢, d, e and f. Such a complex of Pt ie. (PY) (Br) (Cl) 4 @ (NO2) (CsHs) (NHg)] has been made and should have 15 geometrical isomers with a pair of optical cnantiomers. Although a few geometrical isomers have been prepared but none has been AB i resolved. It has been observed that optically active co-ordinate compounds with chelating type ligand can be isolated. Thus [Co (NH3)¢]Cl3 does not show optical activity but [Co(NH3)3 Cl] shows. Examples. (i) [M (AA)3)] type compounds containing three symmetrical bidentate ligand, e.g., glycinato (: NHyCH,COO>). AA = Bidentate ligand, Such compounds also show geometrical isomerism. Only cis isomer shall be optically active. Trans isomer is optically inactive. It is because it contains a plane of symmetry. Thus, in total, three isomers are possible. cl i t in fi ci - yn Cl Ee TRANS OR MESO FORM SORM MBO, LFORM Optically active CIS (optically active)
