Unit Overview

Big Idea:
Students will be able to partition a whole into equal parts and count fractions using concrete
models.
Students will be able to identify the fractional unit of halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths,
sevenths, and eights.

What is a fraction?
What is a numerator?
What is a denominator?
How are fractions used in our daily lives?

● Understand what is a fraction and how we use it in our everyday lives
● Identify fractional units such as halves, thirds, and fourths
● Identify and count unit fractions using pictorial area models
● Identify fractional parts of different shapes and sizes
● Partition shapes into equal parts understanding that the parts have equal areas

Standard:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.1
Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b
equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.3.B
Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3. Explain why the
fractions are equivalent, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
