PROJECT INFORMATION
I. Introduction and Background
Mission Statement

Team HydroG.E.N.N. (Green Energy Needed Now) consists of five senior mechanical
engineer students from Lamar University who have taken the challenge that Shell has
offered; to create a fuel efficient vehicle that can run on an alternative energy. This car will
compete against other teams across the Americas in the Shell Eco-Marathon under the
Hydrogen Prototype category.

Shell Eco Marathon

The competition dates back to 1939 when Shell Oil Company employees in the USA made
a friendly wager over who could travel furthest on the same amount of fuel. Since then it
has expanded to two more continents, includes energy types ranging from biofuel to
electricity, and sparks passionate debate around the future of energy and mobility.

HydroG.E.N.N. History

Lamar has competed in the prototype hydrogen fuel cell competition for the past three
years. The team has used several different materials for the top cowl over the last several
years including carbon fiber, a nylon and Mylar soft cowl, and a hybrid made from Mylar
and carbon fiber. Lamar’s history in the competition has been good, having placed in the
top 25 percent of competitors while spending close to one quarter the amount of many of
the teams participating.
This will be the fourth year that Lamar will be competing in the hydrogen prototype
competition.

II. Project Objectives

Our objective for this vehicle is to find a way to reduce the consumption of hydrogen fuel
while optimizing the performance of the vehicle. For this to happen, we have to create a
new vehicle from the bottom up. The steering system will take after the race bikes and
motorcycles where the wheels can hug the road better while keeping the speed the same,
compared to the on road vehicles that have to reduce the speed to turn. The body will also
be different than the previous years; this will take after a mixture of aerodynamic design
inspired from a Reversed Trike and sports cars.

III. Proposed Project Budget

Team HydroG.E.N.N. will recycle as many parts from the previous car as possible. The
current budget is looking to be as followed:

3
Item/Task:
 Chassis/Body
o Build frame and body from scratch
 Fuel Cell
o Use current fuel cell
 Brake System
o Replace and secure front/rear brakes
 Wheels
o Replace faulted wheels
 Motor
o Buy new motor
 Steering system
o Engineer new tilt steering system
 Body Material
o Fiber glass, clear Lexan (for viewing area)
 Miscellaneous components
o Bolts, nuts, wires, etc.

Total Cost Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000

SPONSORSHIP AND PARTNER INFORMATION
The main source of funding for Team HydroG.E.N.N. will be from generous sponsors. With
your support, Team HydroG.E.N.N. will be able to make our vision for an eco-friendly world
and raising awareness for ‘green’ energy a reality. Any sponsorship amount will result in our
team reaching our goal and also gain advertising exposure throughout the duration of our project.
Sponsors will be prominently featured on the team’s Facebook/website and on the vehicle itself.
They will also be mentioned in all reports, publications and project presentations.
