LYRICS:
[INTRODUCTION]

There is an island where rivers run deep.

Where the sea, sparkling in the sun, earns it the name “Jewel of the Antilles.”
An island where the poorest of peasants labor—
And the wealthiest of grand Hommes play.
Two different worlds on one island!
The grand Hommes, owners of the land and masters of their own fates.
And the peasants, eternally at the mercy of the wind and the sea...
Who pray constantly... to the gods.

Asaka, Mother of the Earth.

Agwe, God of Water.
Erzulie, beautiful Goddess of Love.
And Papa Ge, sly Demon of Death.

[VERSE ONE]

Asaka, grow me a garden SA

Please, Agwe, don't flood my garden TB
Erzulie, who will my love be? SA
Papa Ge, don't come around me TB
Please, Agwe, don't flood my garden SATB
Asaka, grow me a garden… SATB

We dance— SA
We dance— TB
To the music of the gods SATB
The music of the breezes through the green plantain SATB
The murmur of the river and the roar of rain SATB
And if the gods decide to send a hurricane SATB

[CHORUS]

We dance to the earth SATB

We dance to the water SATB
The gods awake and we take no chance SATB
Our hearts hear the song SATB
Our feet move along SATB

And to the music of the gods SATB

We dance! SATB

[VERSE TWO]

On the other side of this island, safe behind high walls and iron gates, the grand
Hommes dance to a different tune.
La la la la la la la la! SATB
They drink champagne, entertain tourists at their fine hotels, and tell their servants:
“Polish up the Mercedes!”

La la la la la la la la! SATB
How fine our clothes are! ST
How fast we drive! AB
We dance at parties ST
While we are dancing just to stay alive! SATB

[CHORUS]

We dance to the earth SATB

We dance to the water SATB
The gods awake and we take no chance SATB
Our hearts hear the song SATB
Our feet move along SATB
And to the music of the gods SATB

We dance to the earth SATB

We dance to the water SATB
The gods awake and we take no chance SATB

Two different worlds—

(Ooh la!) SATB
Never meant to meet—
(Ooh la!) SATB

But if the gods move our feet...

We dance! ST
We dance! SATB
We dance! SATB
