This photograph is from a 2020 article focusing on the massive impact Covid-19
(Coronavirus) has had on teenagers. I selected this picture, because of the dynamic
interpretations that it ignited within me. The creator uses color and value to communicate a
solitary mood. There are dark cool colors along the perimeter of the room. The dull gray
saturated colors reflect the emotions of sadness and depicts isolation. Color is also used to create
light coming from the computer, which helps to emphasize the main object in the image (focal
point), which is the young girl. The balance of people in the image is purposely uneven
(including only 1 main image), which helps maintain the focal point on the girl. The tone of the
picture is set by her unenthusiastic facial expression. The emphasizing light spewing from the
laptop symbolizes how too much screen time dries out a student’s enthusiasm and energy
(engagement). The photograph of her and family/friends on a string next to her as an attempt to
remember the “good old days”. Days when she would get up, get excited about what she was
going to wear to school, then walk and talk on her way to the bus stop and on the ride to school,
and how she couldn’t wait until lunch to eat and have fun with her friends, etc. The huge
beautifully lit city far off in the distance (great depth), which she can see, but cannot freely visit
as she once could before she was quarantined in her house. I think one of the greatest longings
for teenagers is to be social. Teenagers are the most interactive, insecure, daring, inexperienced,
curious age group that seems to live and die by the media and social interactions. Not being able
to freely and safely interact with others is an extremely significant burden to grapple with.
