CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

The year 2020 changed a lot of systems inside the society as the Covid-19, known as
Corona Virus Disease sprang almost all over the countries in the world including the Philippines.
President Duterte imposed lockdown to avoid contact with infected people that’s why the
Department of Education (DepEd) has come up with an idea of Distance Learning in order to
continue the education of the youth. The Department of Education proposed two learning
modalities that public and private schools may use on the new normal set up of learning system
in the Philippines. The two learning modalities are the Online Learning wherein students will use
a device in order to attend their virtual classrooms with their fellow teacher and the Modular
Learning wherein the institution will provide an answer sheets that will be passed and picked on
their respective dates with proper safety measures.

The subject matter of this research is to look for the variables that affects the academic
performances of senior high school students during pandemic. The researchers focuses much of
their attention in studying the possible factors that may affect the learning journey of each
student inside the institution of Krislizz International Academy.

The researches came across the study because they think it could help the students
identify the primary cause why they acquire such grades and at the same time help them with
their traits, behavior, hobbies. Not only the students would benefit from this but also the people
around them especially their teachers and parents. The study’s goal is to be able to promote
greater study habits for the students and improve them from their old self.

De Paepe, Zhu, &Depryck (2018) gave an overview of study about this subject matter.
According to them, there are advantages and disadvantages when taking distance education.
Some of the advantages are self-paced study, time and space flexibility, time saving (no
commute between home and school) and the fact that distance learning course often costs less.
However, Disadvantages include a sense of isolation, the struggle with staying motivated, lack of
face-to-face interactions, difficulty in getting immediate feedback, the need for constant and
reliable access to technology, and occasionally some difficulty with accreditation.
Starting off with this Chapter, this shows of the sensibility and an overview about the
study. This chapter begins with the empirical observations and the researcher’s background
about the study and the specific questions that may help to clear the problem. This was followed
by the Statement of the problem, hypothesis, next is the theoretical framework, followed by
conceptual framework, scope and limitation of the study, significance of the study. Lastly, the
definition of terms that may or may not be taken from other references and was used in this
study.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research attempts to seek Correlation study between Academic Performance and
The New Normal Set up of SelectedSenior High School Students in Krislizz International
Academy S.Y 2020 – 2021.

More especially it seeks to find the answers to the following questions:

1.) What is the demographic profile of the selected senior high school students?

2.) What is the level of academic performance of senior high school students?

3.)What is the level of new normal set up of senior high school students?

4.) Is there a significant relationship between New Normal Set up and Academic Performance of
senior high school students?

HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY

There is a significant relationship between the new normal set up and the academic
performances of senior high school students.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

The Theory of Performance (Top) develops and relates six fundamental concepts to form
a framework that can be used to explain performance as well as performance improvements. To
perform is to produce valued results. A performer can be an individual or a group of people
engaging in a collaborative effort. Developing performance is a journey, and level of
performance describes location in the journey. Current level of performance depends holistically
on 6 components; context, level of knowledge, level of skills, level of identity, personal factors,
and fixed factors.

As the academic department improves its level of performance, the members of


department are able to produce more effective student learning, more effective research, and
more effective culture. Therefore the new normal of education is ineffective due to learning
barriers that may affect the performances of students. Because there are students who find it
difficult to understand a lesson and especially that the learning style is new now, unlike before it
is taught via face-to-face and has an instructor to guide the students.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The conceptual paradigm shows the process on how the researchers processed gathering
information to the respondents. The respondents were given survey which determined the
number of respondents. The respondents answer the questions for the survey, the input serves as
the variables that needs to be studied.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY


The study is descriptive in nature and focuses on Senior High school students on Krislizz
International Academy school year 2020 - 2021. The primary data gathering methods used was
school survey to determine the student’s perspectives on their self-analyzed performance in the
midst of new normal set up. The respondents were composed of 40 selected senior high school
students which comprises 20.41 % of the total population of the Senior High School. The results
of this study is applicable to all persons who is experiencing the same situations.

The researchers considered working on this study to find out if there’s an effect on the
student’s academic performance after knowing the relationship of it towards the new normal set
up. And come up with possible solutions with regards to the development of the students
specifically enhancing the students to withstand and overcome adversities, by enhancing their
study habits and performances towards school.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study attempts to find the relationship between the Academic Performance and the
New Normal Set up of Selected Senior highschool in Krislizz International Academy. Moreover,
this study will be very beneficial to the following:

Students. The students can relate especially this study is conducted in order to give
emphasis to what our current learning systemis experiencing. They would be able to gather
knowledge on what they should do and what they shouldn’t while studying at home. The present
study seeks to find factors that may affect the learning system of a student so that the students
will be aware. The researches launch this study to be able to help the students on how to handle
stress. This will give them a conductive learning and provide them comfort. The study will
provide knowledge to the students who are experiencing the same circumstances and how it can
be handled. At the end of the study, students would finally know why the new normal set up has
a big impact to their performances.

Teachers. This enables the educators to expand their knowledge on teaching skills that
can gain more interest from their classroom. The teachers would be able to understand on why
students keep giving that performance, this have some connection with their teaching skills and
the student’s performance. The research will be able to help the teachers find solutions to
particular problems arising inside the classroom. This will help them to improve understanding
and develop better influence to the students.

Parents.This would allow the parents to enter the world of their child and understand that
the students are also going through a lot. They would be able to give their child the attention,
comfort and support they need. Finally, this would allow them to learn the right actions.

Future Researchers. The ideas presented may be used as reference data in conducting
researches or in testing validity of their related findings. This study will also serve as their cross
reference that will give them a background or an overview of the study. This study would also
help the student researchers to be aware and knowledgeable of the processed involved. It would
help them to be better analyst and could help for more studies in the future.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

 Analyst – someone whose job is to examine or study something in detail.


 Correlation – a mutual relationship between two things or more.
 Distance Learning – a method of studying in which lectures are broadcast or classes are
conducted by correspondence or over the internet, without the students needing to attend
the institution.
 Empirical - relying on experience or observation alone often without due regard for
system and theory an empirical basis for the theory.
 Hypothesis - an assumption, an idea that is proposed for the sake of argument so that it
can be tested to see if it might be true.
 Lockdown – a state of isolation or restricted access institute as a security measure.
 Significance – the quality of being worth of attention or importance.
 Theoretical – based on or calculated through theory rather than experience or practice.
 Variables – an element, factor, and feature that is liable to vary or change.
