decays into two particles of mass m1 and m2 each. One of the particles has a negative
charge -q. The particles move with velocities perpendicular to the magnetic field. After what
time will the particles collide, if:
a. m1 = m2 = m
b. m1 = 2m and m2 = m
2. A particle of mass m and charge +q, enters the region uniform magnetic field B exists in a
circular region of radius R radially with velocity v.
a. Determine the time spent by the particle inside the region of magnetic field
b. If the charge is –q, what will the answer be?
3. A light rectangular wire frame ABCD is used as a current balance. It has the following
dimensions:
AB = CD = 6.0 cm
BC = DA = 15.0 cm
The wire frame is pivoted such that the pivot is 8.0 cm from AB, and 7.0 cm from CD. A 2.0 g
mass is attached to CD. Side AB is entirely immersed in a uniform horizontal magnetic field B
which is perpendicular to AB, as shown in the diagram below
A current of 3.0 A flows through the wire frame, and as the result, the frame is found to
come to a
rest in the horizontal orientation.
a. State the direction (AB or BA) of the current.
b. Calculate the magnetic field, B.
c. Explain why such a current balance cannot be used to measure the strength of a magnetic
field that is not horizontal.
4. A circular coil of radius R, moving in xy plane with a constant velocity v0 to the positive X
axis, enters the magnetic field B0 into the page. The magnetic field is present only in the
region 0 ≤ x ≤ 5R. At time t = 0, the coil just touches the y-axis as shown. The position of the
coil at time t is shown. The resistance of the coil is r. At time t, the coil is represented by
dotted line.
5. On an inclined platform PQRS a metal rod is sliding down on two parallel metal rails PS and
QR without friction. A resistance r is connected across ends P and Q. A uniform magnetic
field of induction B is always normal to the plane PQRS. (Distance between rails is l and θ =
