MS2110 Mechanics and Strength of Materials

1. A steel loop ABCD of length 1.2 m and diameter 10 mm is


placed around a 24 mm diameter aluminum rod AC (see
Figure). Cables BE and DF, each of 12 mm diameter, are
used to apply the load Q. If the ultimate strength of the
aluminum used for the rod is 260 MPa and the ultimate
strength of the steel used for the loop and the cables is 480
MPa, determine the largest load Q which can be applied if
an overall factor of safety of 3 is desired.

2. A rod with a T-shaped cross section is


subjected to a load distributed as can be seen in
the figure. Determine the magnitude of normal
stress that occurs due to the bending moment at
point A.

3. For the beam and loading shown,


consider section n-n and determine
a. The maximum shear stress in that
section
b. The shear stress at point a
