● To check if the patient starts breathing/ to confirm that the first assessment was correct
● Encourage them that they did good, change the subject from the injury
● It’s a serious accident that may be life threatening, they feel responsible for taking care
of the athlete

Chapter 14: thinking it through


● Having the injured patient sitting at the front of the bus is most convenient.
● She had a contusion to the abdomen and the reaction was delayed
● I’d apply ice and compression accordingly
● 1. Assess the Situation: Circumstances, Type of emergency, Severity or Risk Level; 2.
Make a Plan: Decide to Continue with Caution; 3. Call EMS and determine if the bus
should be evacuated.
