Spatial data

Spatial data, as the name suggests, is basically the data containing space information. Spatial
data, also known as geospatial data, is a term used to describe any data related to or containing
information about a specific location on the Earth’s surface. Spatial data can exist in a variety of
formats and contains more than just location specific information.

Use of spatial data in information technology:

Spatial data has various use in information technology. Most common one is the weather
application in our smartphones. This application gives daily weather reports based on the
location of the smartphone.

There are many applications/websites that needs location data to perform its service. These
apps/websites collect these data by the GPS. The data of the GPS is nothing but spatial data.

For example popular ride hiring/sharing applications like Uber, Pathao needs real-time location
data to serve customers. These applications have built-in maps to collect the location data as
maps are a common and reliable practice of presenting spatial data. This is why these
apps/websites ask for location permission from the users to get their desired service.

Also different online food ordering and delivering services like Foodpanda needs location data
to serve it’s customers.

Almost every website on the internet collects the location data of their users to give them their
services according to their location information. For some websites like online travel agencies,
Courier services, Hotel/Restaurant finding etc. it is a must to give location based services to
perform their desired function/service.
