GROUP ASSIGNMENT FOR BUS 5103 (FIRST SET)

INSTRUCTIONS

 Answer the following questions by using survey data set you received.

A. Descriptive Analysis

(a) What is the average age of the sample? Comment on the mean and variance for the data

(b) Run Frequencies on the variables se, marital status, child, source of stress, smoke and
Education Level; find out how many people fall into each of the categories. Present the results
and comment on the distribution of the respondents across different categories.

B. Manipulation of the data (computing new variables)

1. Compute a new variable, Total Life Satisfaction. Call this new variable Totlifesat and run
descriptive analysis for the variable.

2. Compute a new variable, Total Self Esteem. Call this new variable TotSelfestem and run
descriptive analysis.

3. Compute a new variable, Total Perceived Stress. Call this new variable TotPerStress and
run descriptive analysis for the variable.

4. Compute a new variable, Total Perceved Control. Call this new variable TotPercontrl and
run descriptive analysis for the variable.

5. To calculate the Perceived Control Scale, add items pc1 to pc18. Call this new variable
TotPercontrl

6. Are the new variables normally distributed?

7. Check reliability scale for Perceived Stress scale, Life Satisfaction, Total perceived
control scale and Self Esteem Scale. Is there internal consistency among the items? Are
there any items that need to be removed to improve the alpha value? If yes, WHY?

8. Create a new variable (Education) from the variable in the data file (educ). The new
variable will only have two values, indicating whether a person has university education
and above or has education below university level.

9. Create a new variable (AgeGroup5) from the variable Age in the data file. The new
variable will should have only have four values (1=below25, 2=26-36yrs, 3=37-50yrs; 4=
51-60yrs; 5 = Above 60yrs)
10. Calculate frequency tables for the new variables (Education & Agegroup4). Present the
results and comment on the distribution of the respondents across different categories
