UNIT 1: LIFE OF A UNIVERSITY STUDENT
Pre-reading
I. Talk about the answers to the following questions with your partner.
2. "A university student should not be a professional sportsperson, because this can affect his/her
lessons negatively" Do you agree with this statement? Why? Why not?
Janet is almost 20 years and she is an athlete in the university team. She is a student and a sportswoman,
so her daily routine is different from other students.
Janet wakes up at 5:00 am every morning. She spends the first 30 minutes checking her e-mails and 15
minutes meditating. At 6:00 am Janet goes for her first run of the day. She runs for an hour and a half in
the park near her house. After running, Janet has a shower and then has breakfast She usually has cereal
and fruit for breakfast. Only on weekends, she seldom has a less healthy breakfast.
3
She usually finishes breakfast at around 8 am. On weekdays, she always leaves the house at 8:30 and goes
to school. Her classes start at 9 am and finishes at 3 pm. She usually has her lunch at school cafeteria.
After the school, she goes home and has a nap for one hour. It takes 10 minutes to walk from the school
to her home.
After her nap, she studies her lessons and does her assignments. In the evening, during the week, she
sometimes meets with her friends. Most of her friends are athletes too, so they have a lot to talk about.
She typically goes to bed at 9 pm because she prefers to be awake in the morning. She sometimes falls
asleep when she is listening to music, but she never watches television or reads anything on her tablet.
She always makes sure her alarm is set and is almost always asleep by 9:45 pm.
During summertime she does not go to school. She says “I’m currently on holiday and I have a lot of free
time. Having free time is nice, but the problem is that when you are a student, you never have money, and
this is boring.”
Every morning she goes to the gym and reads in the afternoons. But she still has a lot of free time. Going
to the gym takes her about three hours. And she usually reads for one hour. Another activity that she does
is watching documentaries. She studies history, and she loves watching historical documentaries. She says
“I learn a lot from them. I watch documentaries for one and a half hours four or five times a week.”
But those activities are a small part of her day, so this summer she wants to find a part time job. She thinks
she can work at a gym as a trainer. She says “I am going to talk with my coach at school. Maybe he can
help me to find a job as a trainer.” She wants to earn money during July and August so that she can go on
a holiday during the first two weeks of September.” She tells us, “My school generally starts at the end of
September, so I can go on a camping holiday before the summer ends.” And she adds “I think September
is the best time to go on a vacation, because prices are lower and the weather is cooler in most holiday
resorts.”

First Day at University
1 How many important days do you have in your life? And, do you remember these days? I remember
my first day at university very clearly. I was very excited and happy. At the same time, I was very
stressful, because I did not know anyone. But, I never forget my first day at university.
When I arrived at the university, I was confused and lost. I did not know where to go. I had to ask a
student, “Where do the first-year students meet?” This person was very polite, so he showed me
2
the way. I walked through some big buildings, and I arrived at the place. When I saw many students,
I was afraid
After a while, I told myself “Try to be brave!” I asked one girl, “What is happening here?” Then we
started talking about ourselves. I mean we introduced ourselves. Her name was May. May and I
3 were in the same class, so we joined in the activities for “the first year” students. Then, I felt better.
The activities helped me to be part of a team and I began to feel that I became a university student.
Later, we began our classes. At first, all our classmates were quiet. The teacher talked about the
lesson for a while. Then we introduced ourselves. The teacher asked us to work in groups and
complete an ice-breaker activity. At that time, I met two girls. Their names were June and Apple.
4 Soon we became good friends and started chatting. We learnt more about each other. June was
from California and she was interested in playing the guitar. Apple was from Washington and she
liked singing songs. Well, at that time I was good at playing the drums. We decided to form our
music band. We came from different cities, but we had a lot in common.
We spent the rest of the day together. When the class was over, we went to a café in our campus
and we had our lunch there. Then, Apple said “I want to buy a pair of shoes.” So, we went to a
5 shopping mall by subway. We talked about our hobbies, families and plans on our way to shopping
mall. June and I helped Apple during the shopping and she bought her beautiful sneakers. I bought
a silver necklace on that day. Believe me I keep that necklace as a memory and I sometimes wear
it.
I always remember that day because I could meet many people. Most importantly, I met my best
6 friends. Finally, I think it is natural to feel nervous on our first day at the university. But difficult
experiences often have happy endings. In short, my first day in the university was very memorable.

Study Skills Tips
Many studies about language learning ask the question: What makes a good language learner? There are
some things that good language learners do and some things they don't do. Here are some of the most
useful suggestions from studies.
Don't be afraid of making mistakes. People often get things wrong. Good language learners notice
their mistakes and learn from them.
Do group activities. People use language to communicate with other people. A good language
learner always looks for opportunities to talk with other students.
Make notes during every class. Notes help you to remember new language. Look at your notes when
you do your homework.
Use a dictionary. Good language learners often use dictionaries to check the meaning of words they
do not know. They also make their own vocabulary lists.
Think in the language you are learning outside the classroom. When you are shopping or walking
down the street, remember useful words and phrases. Sometimes, when you are at home, say new
words to practice your pronunciation.
Do extra practice. Test and improve your language, reading and listening skills with self-study
material. You can find a lot of this online.
Imagine yourself speaking in the language. Many good language learners can see and
hear themselves speaking in the language. This helps their motivation.
Enjoy the process. Good language learners have fun with the language. Watch a TV series or film,
listen to songs, play video games, or read a book. It is never too late to become a good language
learner.

UNIT 4: HOLIDAY PLANS
Pre-reading
I. You will read an e-mail. In this e-mail, Alan asks questions to Joseph about where to stay during their
next holiday. Look at the pictures and make predictions about their next holiday by answering the
following questions.
1. Where do they want to go? ___________________________________________
12
II. Skim the text and check your predictions.
III. The following words in Column A are written in bold in the text. In Column B, their definitions are
given. Match the words in Column A with their definitions in Column B.
Column A Column B
______ 1. accommodation a. pay to use something for a short period; rent
_______ 2. hire b. use something at the same time with someone
_______ 3. dormitories c. reserve; make reservation
_______ 4. triple d. kept apart; independent
_______ 5. book e. large buildings with rooms where university students live
_______ 6. share f. having three parts
______ 7. separate g. plans; programs
______ 8. arrangements h. a place to live or stay
I start to think about accommodation. We couldn't camp after last year, because I hated staying in a tent
in all that rain :(
Kevin wants to hire a caravan. There are some nice ones with 3 bedrooms, showers, and cooking
facilities. But there is a problem. The caravan parks do not take short reservations in the summer. The
minimum stay is a week. It’s a pity because there are several nice parks near the beach.
There’s a youth hostel in New Sands. It’s the cheapest option after camping, and there’s a big kitchen
and dining room where we can cook. The problem is that accommodation is in dormitories and I don’t
really want to sleep with other people.
There are a few guest houses in New Sands. Some have triple rooms, so we should book two rooms.
They are not expensive, but we cannot cook there. We have to eat out at restaurants or eat sandwiches
for every meal! We must book soon if we choose that option because many guest houses are already
full. The hotels in New Sands are very expensive. Of course, I want to stay at the Sunrise Pavilion because
13
it has a wonderful rooftop pool :)
The final option is to rent a cottage. Some cottages offer mid-week breaks in summer, and I found one. It
has three bedrooms - a double and a single, so two of us must share a bed. There is a big kitchen diner
with a microwave, washing machine and dishwasher. The living room has a TV and DVD player. There is
just one bathroom, but there’s a separate WC. There is a nice garden too. It is 5 miles from the beach,
but we can hire a car. Renting a car is the best option because here are not any buses.
Which option do you prefer? Let me know so I can make the arrangements.
Cheers
Alan

Madagascar
A. ____________________
Madagascar has two seasons, a warm, wet season from November to April, and a cool dry season between
May and October. But different parts of the country have very different weather. The East coast is hotter
and wetter, with up to 4000mm of rainfall every year. In the rainy season, there are strong winds, and
these can cause a lot of damage. Avoid visiting eastern Madagascar between January and March because
the weather can make road travel very difficult. The dry season is more pleasant. The high, central part of
the country is drier and cooler. About 1,400 mm of rain falls in the rainy season, with some thunderstorms.
The summer is usually sunny and dry, but it can be cold, especially in the mornings, and it may snow in
mountain areas above 2,400m. The west coast is the driest part of the island. Here, the winter months are
pleasant with little rain, cooler temperatures, and blue skies. The summers can be extremely hot. This
part of the country is semi-desert, and only gets around 300mm of rain every year.

Organized tours are the most common way to visit the country. One guide told me "About 80% of visitors
come on organized tours, and the other 20% rent a car with a private driver to get around. " Most of the
tourists are the elderly and they are mainly from European countries. Most younger travelers stay away
because getting to the country and tours are very expensive.

Madagascar has fascinating landscapes: dripping green-colored rainforests, baobab trees that are over the
savannah, and very beautiful limestone pinnacles. The human landscapes are equally charming. In the
highlands, there are the rice fields and the pastel images of multicolored Hauts Plateau houses. On the
east coast, you will find golden beaches that are full of palm trees. Out to the west and south, you can see
the forest and the rivers.

Madagascar’s food culture is based on rice (riz or vary in Malagasy). Happily, there are a lot of other
interesting types of food. The main options for eating out in Madagascar are hotelys (local Malagasy

Wintertime
Brrrr. Winter is cold in some places. Many plants do not grow during winter. Some plants die. Snow and
ice may cover the ground. It can be hard for animals to find food during winter. Animals can survive in
winter in many ways.
Birds and butterflies can fly. Many of them leave and go to a place with nice weather. Then they come
home in the spring. We call this migration. Migrating is a good way to be away from the cold.
Another good way to avoid the cold is to sleep through it. Many animals hide during the winter. Their
bodies slow down. They save their energy. They do not eat. They live off of their fat. They do this until
food returns. We call this hibernation. Snakes, frogs, and bears hibernate.
Some animals store food in their homes. They do not sleep all winter, but they do much less. They live on
what they saved in the summer and fall. This is what squirrels, beavers, and raccoons do.
Other animals do not leave and hide. They must survive. Sometimes nature helps them out. Some animals
grow thicker coats in the winter. Other animals change color. The arctic fox is brown in the summer. His
coat turns white in the winter.
Winter may be pretty. It is nice to see snow on the trees. But it is dangerous too. People are also at risk.
You can get frost, bitten or worse. How do you beat the winter? Do you wear a thick coat? Do you stay
inside? Or do you live somewhere warm?

Pandas
Pandas are black and white bears. The giant panda’s scientific name is Ailuropoda melanoleuca, which
means “black and white cat-foot”. Here are the facts about giant pandas
1. _____________________
They especially live in the mountains of central China. In the wild, you can find them in thick bamboo
forests. These amazing mammals rarely eat small animals and fish, but bamboos are their main food.
Bamboo forms 99 percent of their diet. Pandas are big eaters. Every day, they fill their stomach for up to
12 hours and they approximately eat 12 kilograms of bamboo!
2. _____________________
Pandas grow to between 1.2m and 1.5m, and weigh between 75kg. and 135kg. Scientists aren’t sure how
long pandas live in the wild, but in captivity they can live up to 30 years old. Baby pandas are born pink
and measure about 15cm. They can not see when they are newly born, but six to eight weeks after birth
they can open their eyes.
3. _____________________
People think these animals like to live alone. However, scientists did research and suggested, "pandas
occasionally meet, and they communicate with each other through scent marks and calls."
4. _____________________
Pandas' natural enemies are jackals and snow leopards. These animals can kill and eat pandas. In real life,
snow leopards live in the same habitats of black and white bears and become a danger for the young
23
pandas. Pandas can fight with other animals with their strong bodies, jaws and teeth. So, the biggest
danger to pandas are not the other animals, but the humans. Pandas are in danger, because people cut
bamboos and other plants in the forests.
5. _____________________
World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) works together with the Chinese government to save Giant Pandas.
Thanks to many projects, giant panda numbers are increasing. The Chinese government developed
bamboo corridors to connect pockets of forest. This allows the pandas to move to new areas, find more
food and meet other pandas. In order to prevent local people from cutting trees, WWF and Chinese
government does some projects. For example, they help people to sell their local products such as honey,
walnuts and potatoes. They also provide alternative energy sources, so people do not cut the trees in the
forest.
You can also save more pandas by donating money to WWF. You can find more information about how to
donate money on our web-page.

An e-mail about a Holiday
Dear Suzan,
5 I am happy to hear from you. I work as an Elf during my Christmas holiday, but I really like
it. Here is what I do.
I work as an elf at a holiday resort in Lapland, in the north of Sweden. The resort is in a
forest. Visitors and workers stay in small wooden cabins all around the forest. There is one
large cabin where people eat meals. I started to work here in mid-November and will stay until
10 the mid-January.
Tourists generally stay at the resort for four days. On the first day, they arrive at the airport
and travel to the resort by coach. I do not work until the evening. Sometimes I go skiing. Then,
while the guests are having their evening meal, I work behind the desk in reception. I help
people find their cabins, and sell tickets for extra tours. I do not dress as an elf at that time; I
15 wear the hotel uniform.
On day 2, I and three other elves get up at eight o’clock. Of course, it is still dark at that
time. In Lapland, it gets light at half past ten during the winter, and it gets dark again soon
after two o’clock. We dress in our elf costumes and drive across the snow on skidoos to go to
a cabin in the forest. Inside the cabin, there are huge presents and huge tools. We have to
20 wrap the presents and make toys with the tools. There are mirrors in the cabin windows.
These make us look very small. When tourists look through the windows, they see small elves
who use normal-sized tools!
On the third day, we go to a different cabin – Santa’s cabin! This is the day when the
children finally meet Father Christmas. The children meet Santa and get a toy. Then they come
25 into the elves’ workshop to meet us. This room is full of toys and a Christmas tree. I and the
other elves make toys and talk to the children in our own elf language.
The next day, the tourists go home, and the next group arrives. I work on the reception
again.
I think working as an elf is a magical way to spend Christmas! I highly recommend it to you
30 for the next year. Maybe, we can come and work here together. What about you? How do you
spend your days? Do you work or are you still a university student? Tell me about days.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon
Have a great Christmas

Last Holidays
Susan
Hi!
My last holiday was a five-day trip to Prague in the Czech Republic. I know Prague well because I
lived there when I was at university. It was six years ago. Instead of staying in a hotel, I stayed
with my old friends. It was so much fun, and a little bit like my old life. I wanted to do all the same
things I did in my university days, so I visited the university. It changed a lot and now it looks more
modern. I also went to the supermarket near my old house. I loved seeing all the different foods.
1 I was really happy to find my favorite cheese and chocolate biscuits, but they were a bit more
expensive than I remember! We did some touristy things too. We walked up beautiful Petrin Hill

Hello!
I’d like to share the great time that I had on my last vacations. I went to Conchal Beach, Costa Rica
with my friends. We stayed at a small hotel in front of the beach. When we were there, we took
surfing lessons. My friends and I had so much fun hanging out at the beach. There was another
beach nearby, probably a five-minute walk. It was Brasilito beach, where we watched the sunset,
2 and we set a fire at night. We spent three days on the beach and we usually went to clubs at
nights. Those were in a place called Tamarindo. There is a beach in Tamarindo, too. It was one of
the most special times in my life.

Hello!
My last holiday was a five-day trip to Guatemala. I know Guatemala well because I lived there
when I was a missionary more than ten years ago. I did not stay in a hotel. I stayed with one of
3 my old friends, Henry. It was so much fun. I wanted to visit all the places I lived, so I visited Baja
Verapaz. It changed a lot. I also went to the supermarket near my old house. We did some touristy
things, too. We went to Tikal. Nature is amazing up there. We walked across the historic
monuments.

Hi !
Last year, I went to Cartagena, Colombia with my family and my best friend Luis. We visited my
cousins Mayra and Alejandra. It was the first time I saw them, so I was really excited to see them.
4 My first impression of them was very good, they are friendly and fun. We visited many places ,
but my favorite place was Barú island. That island is amazing. It looks like a paradise. I took many
pictures. The food was excellent. We ate shrimp rice and shrimp cocktail. I had a great time with
my family. We spent three amazing days in Cartagena.

UNIT 10: BLACK FRIDAY
Pre-reading
Black Friday
The day after Thanksgiving is the start of the holiday shopping season. Thanksgiving is always on a
Thursday, so the day after is a Friday. This day is called Black Friday. It became the busiest shopping day of
the year after 2005.
Most stores attract shoppers with big discounts on Black Friday. They open their doors very early in the
morning. They sell their items with lower prices. Some items like TVs are much cheaper than usual. Stores
33
may even lose money on these items. They hope that shoppers will buy gifts for other people when they
are in the store.
Black Friday is a great time to get good deals. The problem is that there are not enough cheap items in
stores. Each store has a small number of cheap items. Many people want to buy these items. They stand
in long lines to have them. They may stand in line for hours before a store opens. They hope to get a low
price on a TV or laptop, but everyone cannot buy one. Some people feel disappointed.
The situation can be stressful, and there are some violent Black Friday events. Large groups injure workers
or people fight for items. But most Black Friday events are safe and fun. Still, if you plan to go, be ready
for large crowds.
So where does the name "Black Friday" come from? It was first used in Philadelphia in the 1950s. The
police called this day Black Friday because of the heavy traffic that it caused. In the 1960s, stores tried to
rename the day "Big Friday," but it did not stick. The name "Black Friday" spread across the country.
Now people all over the country join in Black Friday. There are even Black Friday events in many other
countries. Stores have Black Friday events in the U.K., Australia, Turkey, and Brazil. In Costa Rica Black
Friday is "Viernes Negro." And in Mexico, they call it "El Buen Fin," which means "the good weekend" in
Spanish. I think the language of savings is universal.

of unusual jobs that people do. Here are some of them:
Robotics Engineer
There are a lot of dirty jobs and people do not want to do them. So, companies automated these
3 works or tasks. Robots generally do them, so people can do more important jobs . This caused a
new field, robotic engineering. Robotics engineers build and program robots to do different tasks.
They often design programs that control the robots.
Face Feeler
Before companies of skincare products send their products to shops, they want to be sure that
5 these products are really effective. For this, companies need people who want to try and give
information about the product. This job may be simple, but face feelers are educated

UNIT 12: METAL DETECTORS
40
Pre-reading
Metal Detectors
On a beach, did you see a man with a headset who was pointing a long pole at the ground? If so,
this person was using a metal detector. People use these devices to find metal.
Metal detectors make magnetic waves which go through the ground. The waves change when they
hit metal. Then the device beeps. This helps the person with the device to understand that metal is
close.
The first metal detectors that were made for miners were big and cost a lot of money. They used a
lot of power. And they didn't work well. People kept trying to make them better.
In time, metal detectors got smaller. Now they are light and cheap. They also work better, so people
who look for rings in the water can bring them to the beach. They can look for phones in the sand.
Metal detectors help them find these things.
Metal detectors also protect people. Especially in airports and courthouses, they help to keep guns
out of some places. Some schools in the USA also use them. The guards who look for weapons use
special wands to find metal on a person.
These devices save lives in other ways, too. During wars, people plant bombs in the ground. When
the war ends, they don't clean up their messes. This is unsafe for the local people, so the police and
soldiers use metal detectors to find these bombs. They remove them and help the local people.
These devices also make clothes safer. It sounds funny, but it's true. Most clothes are made in big
factories. There are lots of needles which break from time to time in these places. They get stuck in
the clothes and can be dangerous for people who try these clothes. The companies use metal
detectors to find these needles on clothes.
Thanks to metal detectors because they make the world a safer place.

Who is Elon Musk?
Elon Musk is a businessperson. He was born in June 28, 1971 in Pretoria in South Africa. His
father was South African, but his mother was Canadian. He founded the electronic-payment company
PayPal and the spacecraft firm SpaceX. He also produced the electric car, Tesla.
When he was a child, he was interested in computers and business. At the age of 12, he created a
video game and sold it to a computer magazine. In 1988, Musk left South Africa and moved to Canada with
his mother Maye. In Canada, he studied at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario for two years. Then, he
moved to the United States and studied physics and economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He
started his doctorate program on Physics at Stanford University in California, but he left after only two
days, because he felt he could change the world with the Internet, not with physics.
In 1996, founded Zip2. This company gave maps to online newspapers. In 1999, he sold Zip2 to
Compaq and earned $307 million. Then, Musk founded an online financial services company, X.com. Later,
this company became PayPal. PayPal helped people to transfer money online. The online firm eBay bought
PayPal in 2002 for $1.5 billion.
In 2002 Musk founded Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) to make cheap rockets. Its first two
rockets were the Falcon 1 and the larger Falcon 9. These rockets were cheaper than the other rockets
which were on market. SpaceX also developed the Dragon spacecraft. This spacecraft carries supplies to
the International Space Station. Musk wanted to decrease the price of spaceflight, so he developed a
rocket that can be used again. Musk was the designer of the Falcon rockets and the Dragon.
Musk was, also, interested in electric cars, and in 2004, he founded an electric company together
with Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. The name of the company is Tesla Motors. Tesla made its
first car, in 2006. The name of the car was the Roadster was a sports car and it could go from 0 to 60 miles
(97 km) in an hour in less than four seconds. Two years later Tesla produced the Model S sedan. In 2015,
the company put its Model X luxury SUV on the market. The Model 3 , which was cheaper than the others,
was built in 2017.
Musk can't stop coming up with new ideas. He started The Boring Company in 2016. This
company digs a network of tunnels under and around cities for high-speed, no-traffic driving. In 2017 Musk
founded Neuralink. This company tries to build devices which the scientists can put inside the human brain.
These days, Musk is among the 25 richest people in the world who has more than $38 billion.

Are you an internet addict?
Experts say that millions of people around the world are one click away from ‘online’ addiction.
The internet is where we spend most of our time. But for a lot of people, it is an out-of-control habit
that prevent normal living, and it causes a lot of stress on family, friends, and work.
Kimberly Young, clinical director of the Center for Internet Addiction Recovery (CIAR) author of the
book Caught in the Net, says , "About 5% to 10% of Americans may suffer from Internet addiction and the
problem may be greater in countries like China, Korea and Taiwan. It is a global problem."
Coleen Moore, coordinator of resource development at the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery
(IIAR) says, “I have clients from college age to early adulthood who spend 14 to 18 hours a day online".
But Young notes, “what people do online is more important than how long they use a computer."
To determine people’s level of internet addiction, Young developed a test with 20 questions. “There
is no real medicine to get rid of internet addiction,” she says. “But there is therapy.” The recovery time
changes from one person to another person. At the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery, some patients
need 30 to 90 days of treatment. But experts say that internet addiction recovery should continue
throughout life.
Online gaming is the form of internet addiction and it is increasing among young people. “At first, we
mainly had people addicted to surfing the net, but now we are looking more to gaming,” Moore says
“Gaming is of course one factor that caused internet addiction, but I don’t think games are more effective
than other forms of entertainment in causing addiction.”

51
Looking for a New Earth
For thousands of years, humans have explored the Earth. Nowadays, we are exploring the space.
Astronomers are the modern-day explorers. At present, many astronomers are looking for new planets
and new places for humans to live in the future. But where do astronomers start looking?
First of all, astronomers look for a star because our own Earth orbits a star (the Sun). Also, the distance
from the Sun to the Earth is very important for heat and light. So when astronomers find the star, they
look at the planets around it. Astronomers have already found nearly 400 new planets with stars.
Unfortunately, some of these planets are too near the star, and some of them are too far away.
If the planet is in a good position, astronomers look for three key things: water, air and rock. Water is
important because all life needs water. Humans can drink it and they can also grow plants with water. And
plants produce air for humans to breathe and food to eat. So all life on other planets will need water and
air. Rock on a planet is also important. That’s because there is often water under the rocks.
After many years of looking, astronomers found a planet that is similar to Earth. It’s Gliese 581g and it’s
near a star. The astronomers think it has water and rock and the average temperature is between –31°C
and –12°C. That’s cold, but not colder than Antarctica or the Arctic Circle. Gliese 581g is bigger than the
Earth and a year on it is only 37 Earth days. But astronomers do not think these are big differences and
some of them think Gliese 581g will be a new Earth. But, Gliese 581g is twenty light years from Earth – a
distance of 18 trillion km. , so it is really very difficult to move there.
The astronomers will continue to look for and find a new Earth to live, but I think saving our own earth is
easier and more important. If we protect our earth, we will not need to go to a new planet. For example,
April 22nd is Earth Day. Every year, on that day people in different countries help the Earth. They clean
parks, pick up rubbish or plant trees. Let's not help the Earth only on one day, but let's help it every day.

Measuring health and happiness
The small country of Bhutan in the Himalayan mountains is over one thousand years old. In the past it was a
poor country and a few people visited it. But nowadays, it is becoming more and more popular with tourists.
Medicine and health are improving, and its economy is growing. King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the king of
Bhutan until 2006, talked about his country’s ‘Gross National Happiness’. In other words, he thought happiness
is the way to measure the country’s development.
But how do you measure happiness? Perhaps health is the best way because a famous doctor once said, ‘Happy
people generally don’t get sick.’ It is also easy to measure how many people feel ill or unhealthy in a country.
For example, one survey says Iceland is the ‘healthiest country in the world’ because men and women live a
long time there, the air is very clean and there are more doctors available per person than anywhere else in the
world.
However, there was another survey of the happiest countries in the world and Iceland was not near the top.
The questions on this survey included: How much do you earn? How healthy are you? How safe do you feel?
After visiting 155 different countries, the researchers decided that Denmark feels happier than other countries.
So does happiness equal money and good health? Not according to the artist Erik Krikortz. He feels that there
are other ways of measuring happiness. Krikortz has a website and visitors click on different happy or sad faces
to comment on how well they sleep, their family and friends, their level of stress, their inspiration, and their
physical activity. When you finish, his website adds the results for each area, and it gives you a final result for
your happiness.
In his home city of Stockholm, Krikortz also shows the results of his survey as different coloured lights on the
side of a large building in the city. For example, red means the people of Stockholm are very happy, green is OK
and purple means many people are sad. ‘A lot of people look at the building every day and see how “we” are,’
Krikortz says. The coloured lights are also useful when you visit the city as a tourist. For example, if the lights
are red, you know the local people are feeling happy!
