1 Sunday in Lent Liturgical Color: Purple

Welcome to the church we love! As Terre Haute's first

established congregation, we maintain a 192-year tradition of
service to God in our community. We pray you will encounter
the Spirit in worship with us.
We ask that you sit as nearly as possible where we have
placed bulletins. Family units of any size may certainly sit
together!
We ask that if at any moment you begin to feel ill, if possible,
you immediately leave the sanctuary. If you need to use a
bathroom we ask that you use the one at the foot of the west
stairs, or the one at the end of the ramp if you exit via the door
at the northeast corner of the sanctuary.
For the time being we will offer no children's worship
programming. We do offer nursery care for children aged birth
through three years. We welcome children of all ages to
worship with us throughout the service.
In order to maintain as sanitary an environment as possible we
have removed all hymnals, Bibles, and pads. Disposable
children's activity bags are available.
As we worship together, we encourage you to speak and sing
quietly from behind your mask.

Prayer of the Day

Holy God, by the grace of Jesus Christ

you know the tests and trials we face.
Walk with us through this wilderness.
Come to us with ministers of healing
and visit us with messengers of hope,
so that we may return to you in faith,
believing the good news of the gospel;
through Jesus Christ our Savior.

GOD CALLS US TO CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

CALL TO CONFESSION
If we claim to have no sin,
we life and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins,
God is faithful and just,
and will forgive and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Let us confess our sins before God.
CONFESSION OF SIN
Almighty God: you love us,
but we have not loved you;
you call, but we have not listened.
We walk away from neighbors in need,
wrapped up in our own concerns.
We have gone along with evil,
prejudice, warfare and greed.
God of grace, help us to face up to ourselves,
so that as you move toward us in mercy,
we may repent, turn to you and receive forgiveness.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
(Pause for silent reflection.)
DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Who is in a position to condemn?
Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us,
Christ reigns in power over us, Christ prays for us.
If anyone is in Christ,
that one becomes a new person altogether—
the past has finished and gone,
all has become fresh and new.
Friends: believe the Good News of the Gospel.
All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Hallelujah!
RESPONSE Gloria Patri GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father,

and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen, amen.
* THE PEACE See John 20:19, 21,
26
(We will pass the peace in place. You may turn to
extend your wishes to those nearby. Children are to
remain with their parents for the whole of worship.)
Since God has forgiven us in Christ,
let us forgive one another.
The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
And also with you.

THE WORD

CHILDREN’S LESSON Linda Riggins

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
SCRIPTURE READING
Psalm 32:1-7
Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered.
Happy are those to whom the LORD imputes no iniquity,
and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
While I kept silence, my body wasted away
through my groaning all day long.
For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;
my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.
Then I acknowledged my sin to you,
and I did not hide my iniquity;
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,”
and you forgave the guilt of my sin.
Therefore let all who are faithful offer prayer to you;
at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters
shall not reach them.
You are a hiding place for me;
you preserve me from trouble;
you surround me with glad cries of deliverance.
MEDITATIVE MUSIC
SCRIPTURE READING 1 John
1:5-10
This is the message we have heard from him
and proclaim to you,
that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all.
If we say that we have fellowship with him
while we are walking in darkness,
we lie and do not do what is true;
but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light,
we have fellowship with one another,
and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves,
and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins,
he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
If we say that we have not sinned,
we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
SERMON Steps to Justification: Confession
Rev. Mike Riggins
RESPONSE
from the Brief Statement of Faith of the Presbyterian Church (USA)
God acts with justice and mercy to redeem creation.
In everlasting love,  the God of Abraham and Sarah
chose a covenant people to bless
all families of the earth.
Hearing their cry, God delivered the children
of Israel from the house of bondage.
Loving us still, God makes us heirs
with Christ of the covenant.
Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child,
like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home,
God is faithful still.
GOD CALLS US TO RESPOND TO THE WORD

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Prayers for the Week

Morning

O Jesus,
keep me under the standard of your cross.
Let me not just look at You crucified,
but have You living in my heart.
Amen
    -- Bernadette of Lourdes (1844-1879)

Evening

Lord  Jesus,
bind me to You and to my neighbor with love.
May my heart not be turned away from You.
May my soul not be deceived
nor my talent or mind enticed by allurements of error,
so that I may never distance myself from Your love.
Thus may I love my neighbor as myself,
with strength, wisdom, and gentleness,
with Your help, You who are blessed throughout all ages.
Amen
