WOODWARD FCU ENGINE RIGGING

The following procedure is offered as a guideline only. Always refer

to Chapter 76-00-00 of the Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM) for
approved rigging procedures.

1. Disconnect reversing cable from the cam box.

a. IMPORTANT! Never attempt to move the power levers into

reverse range without the engine running!
2. A
pply a piece of masking tape between the power levers on the
pedestal in the cockpit.

3. U
sing a pen, make index marks showing where the idle and the
reverse “gates” are on the pedestal.

NOTE
Do not use the placard markings;they generally do not
align with the pedestal gates.

4. Move the power lever ¼ inch ahead of the idle gate.

a. M
ake an index mark on the tape referenced from the AFT
edge of the power lever arm.
5. Move the power lever ¼ inch aft of the reverse gate.

a. M
ake an index mark on the tape referenced from the AFT
edge of the power lever arm.
6. D
isconnect power lever input cable from Beech Arm on the cam
box.

7. Loosen clamp bolt on Beech Arm and allow to swing free.

8. R
emove 8.25-inch interconnect rod from cam box and FCU and
set aside.

9. Insert a No. 41 drill bit as a rig pin in the cam box.

a. M
ake sure to rotate the Beech Arm clockwise to clear the bolt
head from the rig pin.
RIGGING

10. Allow Beech Arm clamp bolt head to rest on rig pin.
ENGINE

a. M
ake sure to align the bolt head so the “flat” is parallel with
the rig pin.
11. Make sure the power lever in the cockpit is at the idle gate.

a. A
lign power lever cable rod end at the cam box so the attach
bolt will “slip fit” through the rod end and the Beech Arm.
b. Make sure Beech Arm clamp bolt is still resting on the rig pin.
12. CAREFULLY tighten clamp bolt nut while keeping the bolt head
flat parallel with the rig pin.

a. D
O NOT “load” up the bolt head against the rig pin while
tightening bolt.

13. Remove rig pin.

14. Adjust the interconnect rod to 8.25 inches measured from the
center of each rod end hole.

15. Loosen FCU arm retaining nut and allow arm to swing free.

16. NOTE: This step is crucial to getting the rigging correct.

Move power lever in the cockpit ¼ inch ahead of the idle gate
and rotate power lever friction knob to lock power lever in place.
17. Install the 8.25-inch interconnect rod between the cam box and
the FCU input arm at the top hole of each.

NOTE: Make sure the spring-loaded “Lost Motion” link connect-

ing the FCU arm to the FCU shaft is angled with the hinge point
angled AFT. This is IMPORTANT! If it is angled forward, you will
not be able to rig the FCU. Secure Deadband screw against its
stop with a rubber band.
18. CAREFULLY!! SLIP FIT the serrated (vernier) washer between the
FCU input arm and the FCU shaft.

a. THIS MUST BE ENGAGED PERFECTLY!

b. P
ay close attention to the dead band stop screw when tight-
ening the FCU arm nut. If the dead band pulls off its seat, try
again. IT MUST NOT LIFT OFF THE STOP.
19. Once the FCU arm is engaged properly and the nut is secured:

a. Remove the rubber band.

b. L
oosen the friction knob locking the power lever in the cock-
pit.
20. Move the power lever into reverse far enough to lift the dead
band stop screw off its seat.

21. Insert a piece of paper approx 2-inches long by ¼-inch wide

against the dead band screw stop surface.

22. Move the power lever forward SLOWLY until the dead band stop
screw JUST PINCHES THE PAPER.

23. Make an index mark on the tape on the pedestal referenced from
the aft edge of the power lever arm.
RIGGING
ENGINE

24. Move the power lever forward down across each of the two ped-
estal “gates” (SLOWLY!) until the paper JUST RELEASES.

OTE: Apply a small amount of tension on the paper and stop

N
moving the power lever when the paper begins to slip.
25. Make an index mark on the tape on the pedestal referenced from
the aft edge of the power lever arm.

NOTE: This mark should align with the ¼-inch index mark you
originally made earlier.
26. Evaluate the “mapped” dead band range and compare it to what
your dead band target window should be (1/4 inch ahead and ¼
inch aft of the idle and reverse “gates” respectively).

27. It is likely that the aft mark of your mapped dead band will be
somewhat aft of your target position while the forward mark lines
up with your target mark.

28. Using the 8.25-inch interconnect rod:

a. LENGTHEN the rod to move the dead band forward.

b. SHORTEN the rod to move dead band aft.
c. Y
our first goal is to “center” the dead band window equally
on either side of your “target” window.
29. To determine how much of a difference your adjustments have
made:

a. Remap the dead band with the paper as you did before.
b. Recheck and adjust as required.
30. Once you have centered the mapped dead band against the tar-
get dead band window:

a. A
s required, adjust the dead band stop screw to bring the
“mapped” dead band to the target dead band window.
b. R
emap the dead band each time you make an adjustment
until the mapped and target windows match.
31. FCU dead band adjustments are complete.

32. Follow the REVERSING SYSTEM RIGGING procedures in

Chapter 76 in the Beech Aircraft Maintenance Manual for
Propeller Governor rigging.

33. Once that is complete, follow the engine run procedures in the
same chapter.
