GOAL
1. What is your learning/growth goal? What are you intending to learn/refine/change to enhance your
teaching practice?
This year I plan to learn, understand, and implement the common core standards in ELA through the Wonders
curriculum. By using the curriculum to plan and connected my lessons to the appropriate standard I will understand
the standard alignment to each lesson and concept and gain a more clear overall picture of what 3rd grade students
are intended to learn in Reading during 3 grade. This connects with Domain 1a Demonstrating Knowledge of Content
and Pedagogy.

2. What is your rationale for selecting this goal?


I was pretty clear from the beginning of the year based on class performance that my students struggle with reading
more than math. My SPED students require quite a few accommodations in Reading and the MAP scores also indicate
that (although there were big jumps from last year) students are starting the year at a lower level of reading then
when is needed immediately in 3 grade (yellow or 1 year below).

I have also selected this goal because teacher Reading aligned with common core standards and using the Wonders
curriculum is new for me. I have never used the common core standards for Reading before and have never taught
reading at this level of complexity. Learning and understanding the curriculum and alignment to the standards will
increase the effectiveness of my teaching.

3. What effect do you anticipate this goal will have on teacher & student learning?
This will greatly impact the effectiveness of my teaching because I will be able to plan with the end in mind. Right
now I can only do the best with the knowledge and skills I have. As the year continues and I use Wonders and the
standards to formulate my plans, I will learn better ways of teaching specific concepts, I will know what main points
to focus on, and I will be able to identify student progression through the standards better. This will impact student
learning because students will be better prepared for their assessments and there for grow more confidence in their
reading ability. Students will have a smoother transition into the rigor of 3rd grade and they will be able to focus
more on learning the concept. Students will get more direct instruction to the specific standard when I know the
depth of the standards.
