LAREDO

Laredo is a very well known summer village located in Cantabria,

North of Spain.

It has a population of 12.000 inhabitants arriving to 150.000

during the summer months of July and August.

Halfway between the cities of Santander and Bilbao, two

international airports have direct connections to Charleroi,

Brussels and Amsterdam within 50 Km. The population into that

area is 1.500.000. Ferry boat links to Plymouth and Portsmouth.

Historical facts:

Laredo belongs to Cantabria (name that in the language of the

old Celtic people means “the Highlands”) a country with Celtic

origins, the last one in Hispania to be conquered by the Romans.

Anyway the Latin culture never shadowed the old traditions and

religion and so, when the Romans left the Península. Cantabria

was independent once again. The German invaders, the

Visigoths, had to fight hardly too and never were in control of

the Country. When the Visigoths were beaten by the Moors in

Andalucía, Cantabria and the neighboring country of Asturias

were the only part of the Península never in their control. It was

from those ancient Celtic countries that the reconquest begun.

With the creation of the Kingdom of Castile, around 1.000 A.C.,

Laredo with the other parts of the Cantabria coast was the port

used for the wool trade with Flanders. And that was the reason

why the Kings of Castile and later the Kings of Castile and Aragon

used the port for their voyages to Northern Europe, England and

Flanders mainly.

It was one of those Kings of Castile and Aragon, Charles I born in

Ghent, Charles V after becoming Holy Roman Emperor, who

made his last voyage from the Flemish lands to his retreat in

Central Spain. He landed in Laredo.

This is what the Charles V Trophy is trying to re-enact. From the

green flats of Flanders to the green hills of Cantabria all along

Europe’s Atlantic coast.

The Trophy:

A Trophy called Charles V could have only one start, the city of

Ghent and it is in his canals that everything will get started,

hosted by the city. The formal departure will take place next day

from Euromarina Nieuwpoort, the biggest marina in Northern

Europe. From that village, similar in size to Laredo, we set sail to

the waters of the English Channel for a first stopover at the Royal

Clarence Marina in Gosport, Hampshire. Leaving England, the

Trophy reaches Britanny with two stops: the first in Saint Quay

Portrieux in the waters of “La Manche” and the second Breton

stop will be Kernèvel already in the Golf of Biscay. From

Kernèvel, the Trophy will set course to its final destination

Laredo.
