A Study of Industrial Liquid Waste Management
in PT Pertamina (Persero) Refinery Unit VI Balongan

I. INTRODUCTION
As one of the developing countries in
the world, Indonesia continues to experience
an increase in population. Badan Pusat
Statistik (BPS) Indonesia, predicted that by
2045, Indonesia can expect to experience
very substantial population growth – an
increase of 52 million lives. This matter
affects so many aspects, including energy
consumption. Changes in population size
can greatly affect the magnitude and
composition of energy demand, both directly
and as a result of the impact it has on
economic development. Based on the data
provided by the National Energy Council,
the increase of energy demand is dominated
by the industrial sector, transportation,
household, commercial, and other sectors.
In order to meet people's needs while
at the same time improving the environment,
the oil and gas industry has a key role to
expand the production of crude oil into
cruel fuel and non-fuel oil to meet market
demand. But, this optimization of crude oil
certainly produces a large amount of
hazardous liquid waste that is harmful to the
environment and public health around the
industry.
Industrial Liquid Waste and Its Impact
Industrial development is considered
an important aspect of economic growth.
However, industries may generate different
types of hazardous waste, including liquid
waste that caused negative impacts on the
environment. Liquid waste is a waste that is
produced by industrial activities which is
discharged into the environment and is
reducing the quality of the environment.
Industrial liquid waste could discharge into
lakes and rivers that caused loss of
biodiversity and endangered public health.
In developing countries, dealing with
the issue of industrial pollution and the
environment is still in its early stages.
Therefore, Peraturan Menteri Lingkungan
Hidup states that each oil and gas and
geothermal industry is required to manage
wastewater so that the quality of wastewater
discharged into the environment does not
exceed the stipulated quality standards.
PT Pertamina (Persero) Indonesia
In Indonesia, one of the oil and gas
industries that plays an important role for
the production of cruel fuel and non-fuel oil
is PT Pertamina (Persero) RU VI Balongan,
which is the sixth refinery of seven
refineries under the Directorate of
Processing of PT Pertamina (Persero). This
production activity at the refinery produces
liquid waste which can cause environmental
pollution.
Therefore, PT Pertamina (Persero)
RU VI Balongan is obliged to manage liquid
waste in accordance with existing
regulations. Systematic and integrated
efforts made in the management of liquid
waste is an attempt to ensure that
wastewater meets the quality standards. In
order for these efforts to work properly, it is
necessary to create and implement an
integrated and sustainable liquid waste
management system. Therefore, the writer
wants to learn more about the Liquid Waste
Management System implemented by PT
Pertamina (Persero) RU VI Balongan
through an internship program.
II. METHODS
This internship program will be
implemented by direct observation,
unstructured interviews with those
responsible with the liquid waste
management system, as well as secondary
data analysis that is available at PT
Pertamina (Persero) RU VI Balongan. This
methods is used to:
1. Knowing the sources and
characteristics of liquid waste
generated by PT Pertamina (Persero)
RU VI Balongan
2. Studying the processing of liquid
waste in PT Pertamina (Persero) RU
VI Balongan
3. Knowing the suitability monitoring
parameters results of liquid waste
treated by PT Pertamina (Persero)
RU VI Balongan with established
quality standards
4. Providing recommendations based
on the results of an analysis and
observation related to the Liquid
Waste Management System
implemented by PT Pertamina
(Persero) RU VI Balongan
out with an integrated and sustainable liquid
waste management system. Therefore, this
internship program is carried out to analyze,
study, and see an overview of the liquid
waste management system at PT Pertamina
RU VI Balongan.

III. CONCLUSION
As an industry that produces liquid
waste, PT Pertamina is obliged to handle
and manage liquid waste that is harmful to
the environment. To avoid losses to the
environment and the company due to fatal
pollution, waste treatment must be carried
