d ep art m ent is hom e t o six research cent ers and m aint ains close relat ionship s
w it h p art ners such as CoorsTek and t he Nat ional Renew ab le Energ y Lab orat ory.

DEGREE OPTIONS
- Do ct o r o f Philo so p hy: 72 cred it hours, com p rised of at least 36 cred it hours of
coursew ork, a sem inar and at least 24 cred it hours of research. St ud ent s m ust also
com p let e w rit t en and oral q ualifying exam s, p resent a research p rop osal and
d efend t heir t hesis b efore t he t hesis com m it t ee.

- Mast er o f Science ( t hesis b ased ) : 30 cred it hours, com p rised of at least 18 cred it
hours of coursew ork, a sem inar and 6 cred it hours of research cred it . St ud ent s m ust
also sub m it and successfuly d efend a t hesis.

- Mast er o f Eng ineering ( no n-t hesis) : 30 cred it hours, com p rised of 24 cred it hours of
coursew ork and eit her 3 cred it hours of research-b ased ind ep end ent st ud y or a

PROGRA M A DMISSION REQUIREMENTS

- Grad uat e Record Exam inat ion (GRE) w it h q uant it at ive sect ion score in t he
60 t h p ercent ile. A p p licant s w ho have g rad uat ed from Mines w it hin t he
p ast five years are not req uired t o sub m it GRE scores.

- For int ernat ional ap p licant s or ap p licant s w hose nat ive lang uag e is not
Eng lish, a TOEFL score of 79 or hig her (or 550 for t he p ap er-b ased t est ,
213 for t he com p ut er-b ased t est ) is req uired . In lieu of a TOEFL score, an
IELTS score of 6.5 or hig her w ill b e accep t ed .
