Catalog Description
An introduction to deterministic optimization methodologies including approaches from linear, discrete,
and nonlinear optimization including algorithms and computations. Applications will be introduced as
appropriate.
Prerequisites
Linear algebra, basic computer programming
Textbook
Introduction to Mathematical Programming or Introduction to Operations Research by Wayne Winston
(any edition).
Face covering use will be in addition to and is not a substitute for social distancing. Anyone not using a
face covering when required will be asked to wear one or must leave the area. Refusal to comply with
the requirement may result in discipline through the applicable conduct code for faculty, staff or
students.
There are a few exemptions. Reasonable accommodations may also be made for those who are unable
to wear a face covering for documented health reasons.

Homework: Homework problems will be given periodically for practice, but they will not be graded.
Quizzes: Quizzes will be given every Thursday (see schedule below). The quizzes will cover material up to
and including Tuesday’s lecture in the same week (for example, the quiz on Thursday, August 27th will
cover all material through Tuesday, August 25th). Quizzes will be in Canvas. Each quiz will be released at
7am Eastern time and closed at 11pm Eastern time. The allowable time for each quiz, once accessed,
will vary based on the quiz content, but will be no more than 1 hour.
Project: You will be assigned a computer-based project using optimization software. You will complete
this project in teams of three. Groups will be formed early in the semester (but not in the first week).
For Covid-19, individuals who fall into higher risk groups, as defined by the Georgia Department of
Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, may request an accommodation.
