Good day! Being the chosen warrior from the land of mortals, you have
been summoned by Creativa Kingdom to help save its queen from deep
slumber. Diego, the magical guide was sent to help you surpass the
challenges. You, together with him, must embark on a magical journey reach
the land of Creativa where the queen and her people await you.
As the guide, he will show you the way to reach Creativa. But be careful
for the path is never easy because of the challenges ahead. There are five
(5) elemental crystals that you need to collect and surpassing each learning
module will earn you a powerful crystal. Gather them all to save the dying
kingdom of Creativa as soon as possible before it is too late.
In the first two modules, you have earned the air and water crystals. Use
them on your advantage to accomplish the different tasks in this module.
For today, you and Diego must reach the land of Homorpheus where
the fire crystal is kept. This land is protected by ferocious fire wolves. As such
you are expected to define homonym and use appropriate words in
sentences through homonyms
You are off to a magical place known as Homorpheus, the Fire kingdom.
Use the power of the water crystal to have immunity from the ravishing tongues
of fire. However, this place is guarded by the fire wolves. They must be tamed
and the only way to do is to surpass the challenges.
Having succeeded the first two modules will equip you with a better
knowledge to surpass the challenges ahead. Good luck!
Diego instructed you that for you to be able to activate the power of
the water crystal, you need to review the previous lesson through matching
the words with their correct meanings. Ready? Please write your answers on
your notebook.
A B
1. Air (connotative) a. one who inherits properties
and/or title
2. Effect (denotative) b. an after product of something done
1
3. Affect (denotative) c. full of trickery and self-invested
interest
4. Heir (denotative) d. to influence
5. Dictionary (denotative) e. a reference material
Did you get all four correctly? Very Good. Now, use the power of the air
again to bring you to Homorpheus. By the power of the air, I summon all mighty
forces. Bring us to Homorpheus in no time!
All right! You made it to the Homorpheus, the fire kingdom. Now, it is time
to use the power of the water crystal. By the power of the air, I summon all
mighty forces. Protect us from the ravishing tongues of fire.
When you used the power of the water crystal, you used our knowledge
of connotative and denotative meanings. Deepen your understanding of the
use of words by remembering that their meanings are sometimes tricky. You
have to establish the skill of proficiently determining their meanings even if they
sound or look the same.
Upon arrival, a pack of ferocious fire wolves attacked but luckily your
immunity to fire saved you and Diego. To tame these wolves, you must
surpass their tasks successfully. Failing to accomplish these will turn you into
ashes that no water crystal could ever defy.
The wolves want you to pronounce the following words loudly and
correctly. Ready?
1. AIR
2. HEIR
3. AFFECT
4. EFFECT
Questions: What do they have in common? _________________________
In general, what do we call these words? H __ __ __ __ __ __ S
The task above asked your prior knowledge about words and how they
differ not just in spelling but also in meaning.
2
In writing, many words sound or look alike, causing confusing to the
writer. Generally we call these words as HOMONYMS. There are two
classifications of homonyms: homophones and homographs.
• Homophones are words of the same sound but different in spelling and
meaning, e.g. air vs. heir, see vs. sea, cell vs. sell, canvas vs. canvass,
bare vs. bear, and others.
• Homographs are words of the same spelling but may be different in
pronunciation and in meaning, e.g. act vs. act, account vs. account,
record (n) vs. record (v), and others.
Can you enumerate more examples? Copy the table provided below
in your notebook and enumerate at least 20 pairs each for homograph and
homophone.
Homographs Homophones
still still Sell cell
How did you find the task? Was it challenging? The task wanted you to
establish a clearer understanding of the distinctions.

Make a list of at least 15 commonly misused words in English aside from
the ones we have taken up. Have these words defined and used in sentences.
You may add some creativity in doing it through the help of your
parents/guardian. Have this on a long-sized bond paper. This will be part of
your portfolio. Happy working!
Congratulations! You just earned the fire crystal. It has the power
to shoot fire arrows that for sure will be of big advantage in your journey
to more kingdoms to collect the other crystals. With power, you can
achieve better and more!
