THE LEGEND OF BANYU URIP

The legend of Banyu Urip began with the expulsion of a prince from the Majapahit
Kingdom. At the time Majapahit was ruled by King Hayam Wuruk. From his concubine, the
king had a son named Prince Joyokusumo and a daughter named Galuhwati. One day the
King held a large meeting that was attended by high-ranking royal officials and relatives of
the king, except for his own son Prince Joyokusumo. He sent Patih Gajahmada to look for
the prince. When he found the prince, he was looking for grasshoppers to feed his favorite
bird, a quail. The bird was given the name Kebrok. Because of its magic, the bird is often
pitted with other birds. It is said that Kebrok can defeat a tiger.
With anger the King then expelled his son Prince Joyokusumo. With grief, the Prince
and his younger sister, Galuhwati, left Majapahit and headed west. Day and night the two
siblings crossed the wilderness and one day arrived in this region. Because of thirst, his
sister, Galuhwati, asked for water. Prince Joyokusumo immediately pulled his inherited kris
named Kyai Dhalang (another version stated that it was named Panubiru) and stick it to the
ground causing water to came out. The water is then used for drinking and bathing. Because
the water was very refreshing and gave life (urip) to the folks around it, the region was
named Banyu Urip.
