What is It

Based on the comic story you have read, let’s find out the elements and
principles applied in it.

What is comic?

Comic is a medium of expression that communicates ideas through

images, often combined with text or other forms of visual information.
Comics frequently take the form of combining sequences of panels of
images.

There are four (4) elements of comic art. These are the direction,
bubbles, caption and sound effect.

Direction - find a panel where a speech bubble on the left

is read before the speech bubble on the right.

Bubbles - a speech indicator, containing the characters

dialogue.

Caption – words appear in a box separated from the rest of

the panel or page, usually to give voice to narrator, but
sometimes used for the characters thought or dialogue.

11
Sound effect – words that indicate a sound that
accompanies the comic panel

There are five (5) principles of Comic Art; these are the story line
and character, Preliminary sketches, outline sketch, coloring, and
Draw speech bubbles.
1. Story line and character – Story line very first step to create a comic
or graphic novel is to develop a story line. This includes how many
as well as the sizes of the panels, the angles of the pictures, etc.
depending on how through you like to be in your planning, you can
even write out the dialogue beforehand. Character sketch out
orthographic views of your characters. Know how you want them to
look and what you want them to wear before you start drawing your
comics so you don’t have to go back and change everything.

2. Preliminary sketches – this helps the line stands out more (color
wise) so you do not get confuse, when you start your sketches, with
which line are on which layer.

3. Outline sketch – create a new layer on top of your preliminary

sketches and use a felt tip pen or an inking pen to trace over in
black.

12
4. Coloring – this tool enables you to color close shapes and figures.

5. Draw speech bubbles – this tool is especially useful when trying to

make straight lines or perfect curves. Make sure you know what your
characters will say so you know how big to space your speech
bubbles

13
What’s More

Let’s do it.

ACTIVITY 1 Directions: Study the picture below and create a short comic
story. Use the bubbles indicated in the comic. Make your sentences brief
and clear as possible.

14
ACTIVITY 2 Directions: Study and identify the 4 elements of comic art in
the picture below, and expain it.

What I Have Learned

What should we remember when we are doing a comic art?

Remember

• When doing comic art, text is frequently incorporated into

comics via speech balloons, captions and sound effects
• Speech balloons indicate dialogue
• Captions give voice to a narrator, convey characters’
dialogue or thoughts
• Sound effects mimic non-vocal sounds textually using
onomatopoeia sound-words

15
What I Can Do

ACTIVITY 3: Let’s create a comic.

Directions: Create your own character and make small conversation out of
it. Make it look like a comic. Use only 4 speech bubbles. Make sure the
elements and principles are applied.
