The biggest challenge today before the Indian oils & fats industry is to limit the trans-fat content below 3% from Jan 2021 and below 2% before Jan 01, 2022 in line with the mandate of FSSAI, country’s apex food safety regulator. It is a daunting task. We need to recognize, scrutinize and prioritize the possible steps to be taken to achieve this target. It is the immediate need of the industry to deliberate and share the potential solutions. OTAI has just celebrated 78 years as an organization and has a long list of achievements. The Association is engaged in disseminating contemporary relevant information on scientific and technical developments by sharing through Workshops, Refresher courses, Popular lectures, National/International Serninars and conferences. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) announced that all edible refined oils, vanaspati, bakery shortening, margarines, vegetable fat spreads and mixed fat spreads may only contain 3 per cent or less trans fats by January 2021 and 2 per cent or less trans fats by January 2022. As per FSSAl, this is an important milestone since the World Health Organization (WHO) has called for global elimination of trans fat by 2023. Eliminating industrially produced trans-fatty acids can save 17 million lives over the next 25 years. It is now utmost important to collectively decide the technological solutions that are industrially viable to achieve this ambitious goal of Trans fat below 2% before 2022. HUSAIN ZAHEER MEMORIAL AWARD This award was instituted by Zaheer Science Foundation of the CSIR in the year 1979, to perpetuate the memory of Dr. S. Husain Zaheer, for excellence in research contribution in Oil Chemistry and Technology, Surface Coatings and allied subjects. The winner for this award is Dr. Ram Chandra Reddy Jala (Senior Scientist in Centre for Lipid Science & Technology of CSIR-IICT, Hyderabad) S. D. THIRUMALA RAO MEMORIAL AWARD This award has been instituted from the year 2003 in memory of Shri S. D. Thirumala Rao. This award is given for outstanding contributions (Papers published/Patents taken) during three calendar years preceding the year of award on the relevant subject. The winner for this award is Dr. Konda Reddy Kunduru (Postdoctoral Fellow at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology) DR. R. K. KHANNA MEMORIAL AWARD This award was instituted with the support of OTAI (CZ) in memory of Prof. R. K. Khanna. This team award is for the best research paper published in all issues of the Journal of Lipid Science Technology, which appears during previous calendar year.
