GENDER EQUALITY CONTEXT IN INDONESIA

According to the 2016 Women’s Health and Life Experiences Survey, one in three women aged
15-64 years in Indonesia reported that she had experienced physical and/or sexual violence in her
lifetime. Women also face legal barriers and discrimination in the economy: in 2017, Indonesia’s
female labor-force participation rate (51%) was well below that for males (80%). Indonesia has
put in place several laws, regulations and programs that provide support to girls and women.
However, legal barriers in some key areas coupled with a patriarchal culture and religious
conservatism, continue to prevent girls and women from fulfilling their rights. Tax and
inheritance laws, for example, discriminate against women and legislation to protect women
against sexual harassment and domestic violence is weak or goes unenforced.

To reduce gender inequality, then there are some measures/solutions suggested to address the
cultural and structural factors that help produce gender equality. Which measure that you think
the most effective way to solve the gender inequality problems?

1. Reduce socialization by parents and other adults of girls and boys into traditional gender
roles.
2. Confront gender stereotyping by the popular and news media.
3. Increase government funding of high-quality day-care and other services for girls and
women who have been raped and/or sexually assaulted.
4. Increase mentorship and other efforts to encourage the movement of women into higher
levels in the organization, creating a more equal workforce/gender reflective.

WATER CRISIS

In an area of about two million inhabitants, there is a limited water source with a lack of
infrastructure. To reach the area, we need a day of commuting time using a motorbike from the
nearest city. The distance is estimated as far as 400 km. As a result, all the residents were isolated
from the world. The lack of water supplies due to a long dry also affecting agriculture. Though,
the area is a beautiful savanna tourism potential.

For today's FGD, please discuss several actions to address the issue. These actions can be in the
form of:
1. Build reservoirs that will damage part of the area and are expensive.
2. Build a road that can cost a lot of money.
3. Build an airport that has the potential to damage the savanna.
4. Invite investors to juggle the area.
5. Bring water supply every dry season.
