Brand name: Clarithromycin
Mechanism of Action:
Clarithromycin, a semisynthetic macrolide antibiotic derived from erythromycin, inhibits
bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit. Binding inhibits
peptidyl transferee’s activity and interferes with amino acid translocation during the translation
and protein assembly process.
Dosage:
 250mg tablets
 500mg tablets

Indications:

 Lower respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia);


 Upper respiratory tract infections (e.g., pharyngitis, sinusitis);
 Skin and soft tissue infections (e.g., folliculitis, cellulitis, erysipelas);
 Disseminated or localized mycobacterial infections due to Mycobacterium avium or
Mycobacterium intracellular.
 Localized infections due to Mycobacterium chelonian, Mycobacterium fortuitism
 Prevention of disseminated  Mycobacterium avium complex infection in HIV-infected
patients with CD4 lymphocyte counts less than or equal to 100/mm3
 Eradication of H. pylori
 Treatment of odontogenic infections

Contraindications:

Clarithromycin Pediatric Suspension is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity


to macrolide antibiotic drugs or any of its excipients.

Side Effects:

 Stomach pain
 Mild diarrhea
 Metallic taste in your mouth
 Sleep problems (insomnia)
