Chapter 5

Green skill

Green skills are those skills needed to adapt processes, services and products to climate
change and the environmental regulations and requirements related to it. They include the
knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a
sustainable and resource-efficient society. These skills are required in areas such as
Renewable energy, climate change readiness, Wastewater treatment, Climate-resilient
cities, Green construction, Solid waste management etc.

Green jobs
Green jobs are decent jobs that contribute to preserve or restore the environment, be they in
traditional sectors such as manufacturing and construction, or in new, emerging green sectors
such as renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Green jobs help:

• Improve energy and raw materials efficiency

• Limit greenhouse gas emissions
• Minimize waste and pollution
• Protect and restore ecosystems
• Support adaptation to the effects of climate change

GREEN JOBS:

i. Urban Growers: They manage terrace top gardens to grow fruits and vegetables in
urban areas. They use environment friendly ways to grow fruits and vegetables. The
rising instances of food adulteration and use of pesticides in fruits and vegetables has
paved a way for need of Organic food.

ii. Clean Car Engineers: Recent initiations by Government on restricting the vehicular
movement around Diwali time through ‗Odd-Even‘ Scheme says a lot about the need
of Clean Car Engineers. These people explore ways and means in which the cars don‘t
emit poisonous gases and keep the air clean to breathe. The Clean Car Engineers job is
to design future transport that will be sustainable. This would not only mean to help
keep air clean but also how to keep natural resources available for future generation
without compromising the quality – as in average engine life, durability etc.

iii Biofuel Jobs: Biofuel is the nonconventional fuel that is sought for to run vehicles
without creating pollution. Since petrol and diesel create lot of pollution, there is a need
to have clean fuel.
iv. Solar Cell Technician: Use of solar energy is in high demand these days. This calls for the
services and knowledge of Solar Cell Technicians. It is durable and
affordable is a challenge. Gives better result than other.
v. Solar Panel Engineers & Installer: It play very important role in successfully designing and
installing solar plants to produce electricity.

vi. Wind Energy Workers: After the solar energy, wind energy is also sought for to produce
electricity. Hence, the wind energy workers would be needed to lay down the plan for same.

vii. Wave Energy Producers: Another way to generate electricity without exhausting resources
could be using the energy of waves from oceans. Since, 70% of our planet consists of water bodies,
this could be useful in creating sustainable society.

viii. Water Quality Technicians: Water Pollution is in its alarming state. This has given rise to the
need of Water Quality Technicians to help monitor the water quality and treat

ix. Waste Water Treatment Workers: People involved in planning and constructing a system in
green building to retreat the waste water from the same building and reutilizing it for secondary
purposes.

x. Sewage Treatment Plants: The process to treat the waste in its impure form at a sewage
treatment plant involves human engineering. People involved in the process will also have Green
collar jobs.
xi. Green Builders: Green Builders ensure that environmental friendly things are used to build
houses and buildings.

xii. Environmental Engineers: Environmental engineers provide solutions to environmental

problems by using engineering, biology and chemistry. Providing solution to improve the quality
of soil for better productivity, devising strategies to generate public electricity using renewable
resources like solar street lights etc. is a part of environmental engineering.

XII. Nature Scientists: As we take step towards using sustainable means to create a sustainable
society, it is very important to record and analyse the impact of our steps on environment. Nature
Scientists help in achieving this aim.

xiii Working with a Non- Governmental Organisation (NGO): Working with an NGO for the
cause of Environment provides opportunity to closely work for creating a sustainable and better
society.

xiv. Environmental Education Teacher: A teacher who takes up the role of sensitising young
minds and creates acceptance amongst them to contribute in protecting environment.

ROLE OF GREEN JOBS:

1.Role of Green jobs in toxin free homes:

In our daily lives we do household work, that releases harmful gases into the
atmosphere and contribute to the warming of our planet. Green jobs will
promote the usage of ecofriendly raw materials and conserve energy.
The following is the list of steps; green jobs can take to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions;
1. Reuse, Reduce, Recycle
2. Use less heat and reconditioning
3. Replace your light bulbs
4. Drive less drive smart
5. Buy energy efficient products
6. Use less hot water
7. Use the off buttons
8. Plant a tree.
Green jobs in Solar and wind power:
The green jobs are as follows;
Energy Auditors- they conduct audits determine how energy efficient the
building/home are.
Chief Sustainability officers: they oversee green activities in their organization.
Wind/ Solar energy engineers: they design and develop wind farm systems

Role of green jobs in Water Conservation:

To protect existing and future water supplies, by ensuring that resources are not

mismanaged, over exploited or otherwise used in manner that would be

considered damaging.

The other jobs in water conservation are;

1. Water treatment specialist.

2. Water Auditor
3. Water policy Analyst
4. Water resource planning manager
5. Water Quality Monitoring
6. Water conservation Representative.
7. The above mentioned opening are anywhere, where there is a natural water
8. supply for all users and future generations, identify potential problems to the
9. ecology or environmental health and mitigate them.

Green jobs in waste Reduction Recycling and Reuse:

Eco cycle- zero waste creates jobs, recycling, composting and reusing create a lot

green jobs. Recycling and reuse create at least 9 times more jobs than landfills

and incinerators. E.g. we need force for collecting, processing and preparing

materials.

Its common knowledge that recycling materials helps the environment by

reducing waste….. depending on materials manufacturers can save up to 60% of

their production costs by using recycled materials rather than obtaining, refining

and extracting brand new substances ,e.g. paper, aluminum, plastics.

Green jobs in Tourism:

Indonesia is an example of green tourism. Green tourism is also referred as ‘New

experience economy’, green tourism offers new tourism paradigm; we pay to do

things, not to have new things. Tourists are buying experience not product. It

promotes tourists to be prosumers, i.e.to care about the future. Green tourism

makes an optimal use of environmental resources. The following are the

principles of green tourism; Respect socio cultural authenticity of host country.

Provide adequate wages and safe working conditions. Green jobs are required to

plan;

1. Destination management
2. Destination managers.
3. Trainers.

Green Jobs in building and construction:

Green buildings use ecofriendly materials, benefit environment by conserving

energy. There are plenty of jobs in the construction sector, this sector employs

millions of people, but suffers from a skill shortfall. Attracting talent and

investment is a key challenge. Green building offers a chance to be part of the

solution to global challenges.

The list of green jobs is as follows;

1. Construction worker, crew member

2. Designer
3. Carpenters
4. Building Planner and coordinators
5. Insulators
6. Weatherization
7. Concrete labors
8. Highway laborers
9. Demolition experts

Role of green Jobs in limiting Green house emissions

The key to environmental protection is to prevent the degradation of the natural

environment, which is important for all living creatures, one of the biggest

problem in the environment is related to fossil fuels, which leads to pollution ,

climate change and natural resource depletion.

Green jobs are decent jobs that contribute to preserve or restore the

environment, be they in traditional sectors, such as in manufacturing and

construction sectors or in the emerging green sectors such as renewal able

energy.
