Christopher Columbus sailed on ships from the country of Spain. There were 3 ships in all. They
sailed on August 3, 1492.

La Nina

—This ship was the smallest of the ships from Spain, but still fast and useful.

In Spanish, La Nina means ‘little girl’.

La Pinta

—This was another small but quick ship. It carried 18 people and items inside.

Santa Maria

—The biggest ship, it carried the most sailors and objects. It held 52 people and was heavier than

the others .
