English for Academic and Professional Purposes (EFAPP)

INTRODUCTION

Communication comes in different ways and forms. You make conversations as

you want your ideas, thoughts or comments be expressed and be known by others. The
way you communicate depends upon the context where you are in and on the purpose
of the communication.

The subject English for Academic and Professional Purposes aims to

improve your communication skills in the writing medium and to make you prepared as
you will soon encounter the demands of higher education, especially in terms of making
various academic texts. This will help you in writing and producing just and acceptable
information through critical thinking and communication. The first part (1 st quarter) of this
subject focuses on your acquisition of knowledge regarding the appropriate reading
strategies to better understand academic texts and on your understanding of the
principles and uses of reaction/review/critique paper and of concept paper. The second
part (2nd quarter) focuses on your understanding of the principles and uses of surveys,
experiments and observations and of critique paper.

Aside from knowledge in writing, this subject will also equip you with the skills
and values needed in dealing with the issues of your day- to- day life. With this, it is
hoped that you will be able to engage and involve yourself in causes that effect changes
in society by simply looking beyond contexts.

The whole semester is divided into two quarters which revolve around five major
headings: 1. Reading Academic Texts; 2. Writing the Reaction/Review/Critique Paper;
3. Writing the Concept Paper; 4. Writing the Position Paper; and 5. Writing the Report
Survey/Field Report Laboratory/Scientific Technical Report.

Archive (ACHDA), a project
under auspices of the ASEAN
Senior Officials Meeting for
Culture and Arts, hopes to
promote awareness and
appreciation of the cultural
heritage. As a Vlogger (Video
Blogger) hired by ACHDA, the
head tasks you to make a video
or a vlog (maximum of 10
minutes) which is an advocacy
campaign aiming to make the
young people, specifically the
students aware and
appreciative of arts from a
particular region. Aside from the
vlog, you will also make a two-
page write-up about it. The
write-up will be graded
according to the given rubric.
The Coronavirus 2019
(COVID – 19) has brought not
only the risk of death caused by
the viral infection but also the
psychological pressure to the
people around the world (Xiao,
2020; Duan, 2020), and the
general public, patients, medical
staff, children and adults are the
ones who are greatly affected
by it (Chen, et.al., 2020; Yang,
et.al., 2020; Li, et.al., 2020).
The impact of the virus has
evoked public worry about
getting infected which has
increased anxiety (Bao, et.al.,
2020). The virus has made so
many changes and many
people are having a hard time in
dealing with these changes.
When it comes to education,
these changes have required
the people, especially the
students, to go through big
adjustments for they are no
longer experiencing a normal
school or classroom setting.
As the Guidance
Counselor of Divina Pastora
College, you have to help the
students who are having
troubles in dealing with the
impact and changes brought by
the COVID - 19. To help them
develop their coping
mechanisms, you may tell and
show them some
encouragements and advices
by making a motivational video
(maximum of 10 mins.) and a
narrative report (three (3) to five
(5) paragraphs).
You have to include

 some evidences that will
support the information in your
narrative report. It will be graded
according to the given rubric.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

This Self-Learning Packet (SLP) is your way this semester to master Academic
Writing. Hence, it is very helpful for you to accomplish each and every activity in it.
Following the guidelines below will facilitate you towards the fulfillment of this end.

1. You should accomplish the Pre-test of this SLP for it will tell how prepared you are in
taking this course.
2. This SLP is divided into parts and each will help you master the lesson that aims for
the development of your cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills.

3. The last part of the SLP encourages you to practice academic integrity by writing the HONOR
CODE PLEDGE.

Aside from the module, you will also use Schoology as our learning platform. This is where we
will conduct our Synchronous Class where you are expected to attend regularly. There will also
be a Consultation Period that gives you the opportunity to ask questions and to raise concerns.
You will just request for a schedule through your Adviser.

Always remember that Education is not just the reflection of your name,
but also the reflection of how you build it.
Learning never stops, and it is always there to help you reach your full potential.
It will be easy if you make yourself armoured with God’s love, guidance and support.
