A Gamble Worth Taking

The emergence of nuclear technology, like a double-edged sword, benefits humans and at the
same time leaves them vulnerable to risks. Nuclear energy is essential in the sense that it reduces the
amount of carbon dioxide accumulated in the atmosphere since it does not produce greenhouse gas
emissions. With energy consumption increasing exponentially, nuclear technology may be a timely
response to energy supply threats and rising environmental concerns over the years. The downside is
that nuclear power plants generate radioactive wastes that are extremely poisonous to humans.
Although nuclear waste is toxic, it is usually stored underground to prevent any chance of harmful
exposure to people. Such energy is seen as a potential alternative for fossil fuels, to handle the issue of
rising pollution, global warming, depleting natural resources, and health issues.

Nuclear technology can be one of the most efficient and sustainable forms of fuel, but it is a
wonder why it is not completely operational. Its negative connotation comes from a few devastating
disasters that released significant radioactivity in the environment that were either the mistake of
poorly maintained reactors and ignorance of safety precautions or a natural disaster. Competent staff
and technicians, strict issuance of safety protocols, and added safety mechanisms would stop the entire
worst-case scenarios from ever happening again. While actual world peace can happen without the
need for weapons of mass destruction, there exists a nuclear non-proliferation treaty that regulates the
peaceful use of nuclear technology. Besides, what we have at hand is outdated nuclear technology. If
the people and government policies prioritize investment in technology, there will be intensive research
that might provide a more advanced nuclear technology that will prevent the reoccurrence of past
mistakes.

There are always risks involved in any great human endeavor. However, the benefits of nuclear
technology outweigh its disadvantages. It lets humans fulfill their needs without sacrificing the future
generation's ability to meet theirs. It is one of the ways that humans can sustain themselves and the
environment for the foreseeable future. Hence, nuclear technology can be a gamble worth taking.
