Who were the Ancient Greeks?
The Greek Civilisation began
around 500 BC.
They influenced many other
civilisations not only in their time
but also afterwards.
Their main admirers were without
doubt the Romans.
They were the first to invent
coins/coinage for commerce.
They also had their own alphabet.
The Greeks
gave a lot of
importance
to education
and to
writing.

The Greeks believed in many different gods. These lived in the
highest mountain of Greece – Mount Olympus. The gods were
one big family and the controlled the life of the humans and in
its various aspects. There were many temples built to worship
different gods.

war.
The Acropolis is the tip of the city
and the highest point. It is also
the heart of the city.
The Greek architecture was famous for its wide use
of columns and roofless structures such as the
amphitheatre within which a lot of dramas and
shows were put up regularly.

Games that were held once a
year in the name of the gods.
Only men could take part and
watch the games.
Men from different Greek city
states could participate.
The winner won a crown out of
olive branches.
These disciplines
and other are still
practiced
nowadays in the
Olympic games.

The Greeks were very good fighters. Since Greece was divided into
many small cities or polis, each city had its own army.
Athens and Sparta where two of the biggest cities. One of the
biggest and bloodiest battle ever fought by the Greeks was that
against Sparta in Troy.
Democracy
Every Polis had its own
government. It was
thanks to the Greeks
that we have
‘democracy’ as it
brought equality
between the men and
gave each one, one
vote.
