CENTRIPETAL FORCE  SUMMARY

When an object is experiencing uniform circular motion, it is traveling in a

circular path at a constant speed.

The force causing this acceleration is directed also toward the centre

of the circle and is named centripetal force.

CENTRIPETAL FORCE

The direction of the force is towards the centre of the circle of motion, and its
magnitude and direction can both be derived from a consideration of
Newton’s second law of motion.

ΣF = m · a

Then, recalling our formula for centripetal acceleration as:

We can put these together, replacing ac in our equation to get a combined form of
Newton's 2nd Law for Uniform Circular Motion:

This type of force, known as a centripetal force, can be a gravitational force, a tension,

an applied force, or even a frictional force.

Many stars, planets and artificial satellites ( in geostationary orbits and in

low polar orbits) move in circular orbits and require a force equivalent to the
centripetal force to maintain their circular motion. This force is usually gravity.

The two forces are equal to each other because they are an action-
reaction pair from Newton’s Third Law of Motion.

Notice that we assume the Earth's orbit PATH is

circular,

Of course,

In the time it takes the Earth to complete one orbit, the planets closer to
the Sun (Mercury and Venus) orbit at least once. The more distant planets
(Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) which move slower and have
a greater distance to travel, complete just a fraction of their orbits in this
time.
