Fourth Periodic Progress Report On: Generator Excitation Control The voltage tapped from the stator winding depends on the speed and flux in the synchronous generator. Active power generated by synchronous generator remains constant as the speed of turbine remains constant, by changing flux EMF generated is changed accordingly as well as the reactive power. To change the flux of the synchronous generator the D.C. excitation system of the rotor is changed so that flux linkages is changed. Tests for Regulation Functions and Excitation System a) Different tests recommended by the manufacturer will be performed. b) Primary field tests to: * Transformers tests such as short circuit and open circuit test, insulation test, core saturation test. * Switches © Controlling equipment * Excitation equipment such as AVR, rectifier and all Instrument transformers such as current transformer and potential transformer. c) Phase sequences (in field): To produce rotating magnetic field in particular direction. d) Rectifiers and thyristor tests e) Protection circuits test to check alarming and tripping value f) Excitation and de-excitation sequences 11|Page Control System of Generator System 1. Frequency Control To control frequency of the system, inlet of the steam is controlled. By changing the amount of steam power generated can be changed by changing the turbine speed which changes the synchronous speed and speed of the RMF linking with the conductors of the stator from which voltage is tapped. To make frequency constant there are 3 types of process 1, Flat frequency control 2. Parallel Frequency Control 3. Flat Tie Line Loading Control Need of the constant frequency a. It affects the amount of power transmitted through the interconnected power system. b. All A.C. motors require constant frequency to maintain constant speed. c. It affects the process of industry. 12|Page
