REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2020

THE GOOD WE DO TOGETHER

OUR MISSION

The Upper Arlington Community Foundation enhances life in the city we all
know and love through collaborative relationships that support a range of
worthy programs and initiatives. This is your foundation. We’re eager to hear
your ideas for bettering the community and creating a lasting impact.
Dear Friends,

As our community faces unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 public health and
economic crisis, we find hope and inspiration in the outpouring of support from neighbors
helping neighbors through these troubling times. Thank you for standing with us during our
community’s time of need!

Despite these challenging times, your generosity and care for our community continues to inspire
hope for what we can accomplish together. We hope you will enjoy reading about the projects
and grants made over the last two years in this report.

We invite you to become involved in the UACF. We welcome your comments and ideas and are
profoundly grateful for your support.

Sincerely,

Margie Pizzuti Tracy Kirby Harbold

Transformational Estate Gift from Susan Knell – over $1,200,000

Sue was a lifelong UA resident who loved her community. That love
has resulted in a more than $1.2 million unrestricted bequest to
the foundation. She left a $50k endowed scholarship for a UAHS
senior female basketball player as well. Sue’s relationship with the
foundation began many years ago thanks to one of our founding
members, Mary Ann Krauss. Sue’s generosity to the UACF during her
lifetime was wonderful, but her legacy estate gift will help ensure that
the foundation will be able to serve our community for many years to
come. We are honored and humbled by her trust in the foundation.

Heart of UA Award

This award recognizes the cumulative philanthropic and volunteer efforts of an individual, family or
family foundation over a period of 5 or more years of exceptional generosity who, through direct financial
support, demonstrates outstanding civic and charitable responsibility and whose generosity encourages
others to take philanthropic leadership roles in the community. Candidates will specifically demonstrate
significant, long-term involvement with one or more Upper Arlington nonprofit organizations.

2019 Recipient: Tim and Glenda Huffman & Family

The Tim and Glenda Huffman family truly exemplify the Heart of UA
Award and we are honored to name them as our very first recipients.
When an organization in UA needs something, whether it be serving as
an auctioneer at the Tremont School Auction or partnering with the City
Parks and Rec Department on dozens of events, activities and programs,
they are always leading the way.

Along with his wife, Glenda, and his children, Ryan, Tony and Melissa,
Huffman has become a fixture in the Upper Arlington community. He and his wife regularly dress up
as Santa and Mrs. Claus during the holidays and greet children and families during an annual sleigh
ride. They are also known for organizing free community events at Tremont Center, membership in the
Tri-Village Rotary Club and financial support to numerous individuals and organizations throughout
the community. They are true examples of servant leadership and we are grateful to have them in our
community.

Good Neighbor Fund Grants of over $70,000 in 2020 to UA Small Businesses and Residents

This year the Upper Arlington Community Foundation was able to help twelve small businesses and
eleven families through our Good Neighbor Fund grants. These funds went a long way in helping
residents and our small businesses get through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Colin’s Coffee
Colin’s Coffee, a mainstay on Riverside Drive since 2006, is known for great
coffee and character in equal servings. It was the second local business to
receive a Good Neighbor Fund grant — and owner Colin Gawel couldn’t be
more grateful, despite his initial hesitation.

While Colin’s remained open during the stay-at-home order, its business
was impacted. Sales were limited to carryout orders, and Gawel managed
the shop solo. The UACF grant helped his shop continue to give people a small serving of normalcy.

Gawel first learned about the Good Neighbor Fund grant from a customer. He was reluctant, however,
to apply for assistance. “I was shy about it,” he admits. “It can be hard to ask. It’s not in your nature as an
entrepreneur to ask for help. But I heard enough people say, ‘you should really investigate it.’”

In time, he realized there’s no shame in asking for help — especially when it extends to others. “For my
employees, it would be irresponsible for me not to look into this.”

In fact, Gawel said the grant seemed almost too good to be true. “It was such a pleasant surprise,” he says.
“Because it really is from your neighbors. It wasn’t like applying for help from the federal government. It’s
your community, people you know. I feel lucky to live here.”
GRANTS

Cover to Cover
When the pandemic hit, Melia Wolf decided to close the storefront and
only provide home delivery and curbside pickup options. “There were
so many unknown factors about the virus and how it spreads, and the
store is typically full of children,” Wolf says. “Their well-being is our
priority.”

Cover to Cover waited until late June to reopen safely. The store
implemented in-depth safety protocol and continue to offer home
delivery and curbside pickup for orders. Wolf heard about the Good Neighbor Fund through other
business owners and friends in the community and decided to apply.

“The generous grant gave our bookstore necessary financial stability in the middle of a global pandemic
that no business, large or small, was prepared for,” Wolf says. “It was just another example of the great
support we’ve received from the Upper Arlington community”.

Now, Cover to Cover is recovering. “Because of the generous support of our community and the additional
ways of ordering and distributing books that we implemented during the lockdown, our business is doing
well,” Wolfe says. “Not all small businesses in Columbus are as fortunate as we are to have this kind of
community support.”

SOW Plated
SOW Plated was six months into their new brand’s launch at The
Shops on Lane Avenue when the effects of COVID-19 began to be
felt. “Guest counts began to noticeably erode making it evident the
pandemic was about to become a very serious matter,” John Fahlgren
remembered.

As the pandemic continued to progress, challenges became greater.

Fahlgren learned of the UACF through a friend and reached out to
UACF’s Executive Director, Tracy Kirby Harbold.

“Thanks to her leadership and the generosity of UACF, we received critical funding immediately to help
offset some of the unexpected legal expenses incurred as a result of having to navigate our way through
the early phase of the pandemic,” says Fahlgren.

Reflecting on his experience, Fahlgren says, “I’ve been around for a while and have been honored to
work with many of the finest organizations anywhere. Working with UACF has honestly been as good
as it gets. Tracy is an exceptional, fully dedicated brand ambassador for the city of Upper Arlington. This
one experience alone reminds us of why we chose this community to launch our brand. It’s neighbors
dedicated to helping neighbors. That’s what Ohioans do.”

UPPER ARLINGTON LIBRARY

“We are so grateful for the incredibly generous contribution from the Community Foundation for the Upper Arlington Public Library
Early Learning Play Area. The Community Foundation’s support will benefit children through play-based learning that will develop
creative and innovative minds, capable of discovery from the preschool age and up. This project would not have been possible
without the Community Foundation’s support, and this is a gift that will benefit children at the library for years to come.”

in place should any park user ever be in need of an AED. It is our hope that
these units will never have to be used but in the event they do, with this
commitment from our sports organizations, the Community Foundation and
our department, we just may be able to save someone’s life.” Matt Leber, UA Parks and Recreation

GOOD NEIGHBOR FUND

“Dear UA Community Foundation,

Honestly, I don’t even know where to start. At the beginning of this current epidemic I was a little nervous but never in a million
years expected my business to take a nosedive the way that it did. Had your organization not been here to help myself and my family
through this incredibly difficult time I honestly can’t say where I would be right now. Your organization is truly amazing! Everyone
that we have dealt with have been professional and understood the urgency that my family was facing. From the bottom of our
hearts, thank you for being such a wonderful, kind group of people!

Sincerely,
A Thankful UA Family”

GOOD NEIGHBOR FUND

“I saw the impact the coronavirus had on some of my friends and others in the community
and wanted to help. A couple weeks ago, I was helping my parents try to find sidewalk
chalk for my brother and sister. It was really hard to find because the stores were out since
all the kids were home. We were able to find a wholesale warehouse that had a lot of
supply. The idea came to buy all the giant boxes they had put those in smaller boxes to
sell. With the extra money, we would donate that to a charity. The UACF Good Neighbor
Fund seemed like the perfect place to support during this time.”
