INTRODUCTION
This paper describes the Importance of Career Guidance to the grade 11 Senior
High School students of ICCT Colleges San Mateo Campus. Majority of Senior High
School students do not consider career guidance a significant issue. Hence, they have
no or very little realization about the importance of career guidance. As a matter of fact,
career guidance is a very important aspect of your life. In fact, it can make or break your
career. At Junior High School, career guidance could lead students to form realistic
ideas regarding career options. It will prevent them from relying on peer information
when making subject choices for High School (Wahl & Blockhurst, 2000). It could focus
The goal of career guidance should be to provide students with tools in integrating
awareness about themselves, their potential and post school education into informed
decisions about their future. (Kovach,2001). The researchers concluded that many
Grade 11 Senior High School students of Senior High School students at ICCT Colleges
San Mateo Campus are not prepared on the career that they want to pursue
performances and some are choosing the wrong career or strand/courses that can lead
them to fail in the future. If the SHS students choose the right career we can prevent

graduates produced by universities and colleges and the workforce needed by different
companies. The wrong choice of course taken by most of high school students adds to
the unemployment and underemployment rate of newly graduate students. With this the
study determined the factors affecting the fourth year high school students’ career
achievement and their elective grades were considered. Frequency, percentage and
chi-square were used as statistical treatments. The findings revealed that the availability
college. Most of the students prefer to take scientific related field courses, or the
“popular courses” for Filipinos. The least preferred course are in the Agricultural field.
The BOPI results showed that most of the student-respondents are suited to take
professional courses. Students’ preferred course is related to their BOPI result as well
family income, students’ sibling position and students’ third year general average
grades are not related to the students’ preferred course in college to their BOPI results.
BOPI results are significantly related to the students’ elective course grades. Students’
career success can be best attained if proper guidance is given in choosing the right
education, it was not until 1999 that it became a requirement for schools to offer careers
education to all secondary school students and by 2000 this was mandated to include
all students from Year 7 and above (Lynes, 2001; Smith, 2007). In 2003 the Ministry of
Education consulted widely with school Careers Advisors, Principals and Career
Services Rapuara to write a handbook to guide schools. They published the Career
Education and Guidance in New Zealand Schools, (2003) handbook to assist in the
planning and delivery of careers education and guidance, but they did not consult
students or parents as part of the process (Vaughan & Gardiner, 2007). The handbook
was revised in 2008 but the student and parent stakeholders were again not consulted,
education was a high priority for students and should be delivered like other areas of the
6 school curriculum, but without proper funding and clear implementation guidelines (de
Cos, Chan & Salling, 2009; Vaughan & Roberts, 2007; Watts, 2001). Research shows
that careers education and guidance policy has been developed without any meaningful
consultation with students and is just done to them as part of their general schooling
(Levin, 2000; Vaughan, 2003; Howieson & Semple, 2000). The literature suggests
students should be at the centre of their career journey with individualised programmes
within a narrative constructivist mode of delivery to ensure buyin and relevancy (Levin;
2000; Vaughan & Roberts, 2007). The context of this research is to ask students directly
what they need to make informed careers decisions in the secondary sector and what
they understand about current careers theory which will help them to become effective
future career managers and to then compare this with students who left school two
years ago and with the views of Careers Advisors currently working in this field. There is
a gap in the literature in regard to student voice and actually asking them what they
need to make informed careers decisions in this emerging curriculum area. Vaughan
(2003) asserts relatively little research has been done where young people‟s
experiences are placed at the centre and she suggests that careers education “research
and policy is structured by quite particular concepts of youth, adulthood and transition”,
(p.1) which has been generated by adults. The study also investigates what Careers
Advisors consider are the main influences on student‟s decision making, what
qualifications they hold and how they deliver the careers theory and guidance
prescribed in the Ministry of Education handbook to allow for direct comparison from the
students‟ perspectives and to explore an area of research where little has been done in

ASSUMPTIONS AND HYPOTHESIS
ASSUMPTIONS
This research study is anchored on the assumption the importance of career guidance
to the grade 11 senior high school where the students of ICCT San Mateo campus do
not consider career guidance as a significant issue.
HYPOTHESIS
Senior High school Students of ICCT San Mateo do not consider career guidance as a
significant issue therefore most of students can`t find career or courses that is suit to
