GAUGE
28 sts + 27 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) over pattern in Row 4 of Body.
Note: Each hdc, sc and ch-1 sp count as a separate stitch.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

STITCH EXPLANATIONS
Bobble (4 double crochet cluster) Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st, yarn over and draw up a loop,
yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops rem on hook), (yarn over, insert hook in same st,
yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook) 3 times (5 loops rem on
hook), yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.
hdc2tog (hdc 2 sts together) (Yarn over, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and
draw through all 5 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

NOTES
1. Lovey is made in 4 pieces: Body, Hood, and 2 Ears
2. Body is worked diagonally from corner to corner. Stitches are increased on each edge of every row
until widest part (diagonal) is reached. Then stitches are decreased on each edge of every row to
opposite corner.

3. Yarn color is changed to form stripes. To change yarn color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over.
Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Proceed with new
color. Fasten off old color.
4. Hood and Ears are worked separately and sewn or crocheted to Lovey.

Rep last 24 rows until there are 7 B-colored stripes (120 more rows) – you will have 337 sts when all 7
stripes have been completed.
Next 11 Rows: With A, rep Row 4 for 11 more rows – 359 sts when all 11 rows completed.
Decreasing Section
Row 1 (Decrease Row): With A, ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first 2 sts, sc in first ch-1 sp, *ch 1, sk next
sc, sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * to last sc, sk next sc, hdc in top of beg ch-2 – 357 sts.
Rows 2-11: With A, rep Row 1 and change to B in last st of last row – 337 sts.
Next 2 Rows: With B, rep Row 1 twice and change to A in last st of last row – 333 sts in last row.
Next 22 Rows: With A, rep Row 1 for 22 more rows and change to B in last st of last row – 289 sts in last row.
Rep last 24 rows until there are only 5 sts remaining (consisting of 2 hdc, 2 sc, and 1 ch-1 sp).
Next Row: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first 2 sts, sc in center ch-1 sp, sk next sc, hdc in top of beg ch-2 – 3 sts.

HOOD
With A, ch 3.
Row 1: (Sc, hdc) in 3rd ch from hook (2 skipped ch count hdc) – 3 sts.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sc in first st, ch 1, sk next sc, (sc, hdc) in top of beg ch-2 – 5 sts.
Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sc in first st, ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk next sc, (sc, hdc)
in top of beg ch-2 – 7 sts.
Row 4: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sc in first st, *ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * to last sc,
ch 1, sk next sc, (sc, hdc) in top of beg ch-2 – 9 sts.
Rep Row 4 for a total of 64 rows – 129 sts when all rows have been completed.
Fasten off.

EARS (make 2)
Wrap B around index finger. Insert hook into ring on finger, yarn over and draw up a loop. Carefully slip
ring from finger and work the sts of Rnd 1 into the ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 2 (does not count as a st in this rnd and all following rnds), 8 hdc in ring; join with sl st in first
hdc – 8 hdc.
Gently but firmly, pull tail to tighten center of ring.
Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each st around; join with sl st in first hdc – 16 hdc.
Rnd 3: Ch 2, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * around; join with sl st in first hdc – 24 hdc.
Rnd 4: Ch 2, *hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * around; join with sl st in first hdc – 32 hdc.
Rnd 5: Ch 2, *hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * around; join with sl st in first hdc – 40 hdc.

ASSEMBLY
Hood
From WS of Body, position Body so that stripes are vertical. From WS of Hood, arrange Hood on to topmost
corner of Body. Line up edges and stitches evenly and use stitch markers to hold both pieces in place.
With A and working through both thicknesses, sl st along edges to secure the Hood piece to the Body piece.
Fasten off.
Turn Hood RS out.

Ears
From RS of Body and working with one Ear at a time, measure about 5 1/2 in. (14 cm) down along one
side of Hood edge. With B, whipstitch Ear along Hood seam.
Rep for second Ear taking care to ensure both Ears are placed evenly and are tightly stitched.

Border
From RS, join B with sl st in any corner (except Hood corner).
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 3 sc in same corner, sc evenly spaced around Body edge working 3 sc in each corner; at Hood,
sc evenly along Hood brim edge then continue around Body edge; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in each corner st; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 3 (Bobble Stitch Rnd): Ch 2 (does not count as a st), Bobble in first st, ch 1 sk next st, *Bobble in next
st, ch 1, sk next st; rep from * around; join with sl st in first Bobble.
As you work Bobbles around Body edge, use your fingers to pop Bobbles to the front. When working
along Hood brim, pop Bobbles to the back so that the Bobbles appear on the front of Hood.

FINISHING
Note: Use photographs as a guide.
Outline Nose
Measure about 5 1/2 in. (14 cm) down from the top of Hood and mark center Hood stitch with a stitch marker.
With B and straight st, embroider a simple 3 stitch triangle centered under stitch marker and about 4
stitches wide x 6 rows long. End triangle with last stitch positioned at the bottom of the nose.
Do not fill in nose at this time and do not cut yarn.
Embroider Mouth
Continuing with B, use backstitch to embroider the mouth directly under the nose, making center mouth
line 6 rows long and the ‘smile’ about 5 stitches out from the center on each side.

Fill in Nose
With B, embroider straight stitches over the triangle to fill in nose.
Eyes
Place markers for eyes about 4 1/2 in. (11 cm) down from top of Hood aligned as desired.
With B, embroider straight sts around the chosen stitch for eye placement until eye is desired thickness.
Rep for second eye.
Weave in yarn ends.
