A Critique Paper on “Effects of carbohydrates on secretion of insulin from isolated rat pancreas”

The article is from the Metabolic Research Unit and Department of Biochemistry and
Physiology in University of California School of Medicine written by Gerold M. Grodsky,
Adrienne A. Batts, Leslie L. Bennett, Carl Vcella, Nancy B. Mcwilliams, and Desmond F.
Smith. The main objective of the study is clear on the article title which is to comprehend the
effects of carbohydrates on the insulin secreted by isolated rat pancreas. According to their
abstract, without the addition of glucose with less than 50mg/100ml, insulin secretion is
undetermined whereas increasing glucose concentration to 150-500mg/100ml also increases the
number of insulin secreted. Although, galactose, xylose, L-arabinose, pyruvate, and 2-
deoxyglucose did not stimulate insulin secretion. Mannose and Fructose was active in insulin
secretion.

The study is a further study on Anderson and Long’s first research on the response of
isolated rat pancreas to glucose because it was only limited to insulin available at their time.
Grodsky and the rest improved Anderson and Long’s study by using varieties of glucose
available. It possesses a good topic and the abstract presented is precise and clear on the purpose
and on the main methods used. However, in their procedure, they only tested each glucose
twice(?) which can be inaccurate since multiple samples can actually give an idea of accurate
measurements.

The author’s style of discussing is understandable and briefly discussed information that
is relevant to the topic. But did not site the importance of insulin secretion from the pancreas, is
it beneficial or is it unhelpful. The procedures used are based on past reaserches and the authors
cited the basis of their research.
