“Language: The language wars”

The video is headlined “Language: The language wars”.  This is an interview with a middle-aged man,
Henry Hitchings, who is a linguistics expert and the author of the book called “The Language Wars”

The interview was published as a training exercise for Language Leader Intermediate Programme. The main
idea of the video is to show arguments over the correct use of English. The aim of the publication is to
provide the viewer with some interesting information about the language itself, the Globish variation of it
and the opinion of the expert on these topics. This video shows an interview between a reporter and main
character, Henry Hitchings, who tells us his own opinions of the topic such as language and its uses.

According to the video, there are several chapters of these small conversations. The video greets us
with a basic introduction of who he is and the exposition of where and how the English language is used
around the world.  Firstly, he explains how many people are there as native users and even tells us that
around two billion people study English as their second one. Also, he explains how native users think that
they “own” the language in a way. Video then explains how Globish is a strange idea for the language and
how Global English would be a more suitable term to use.

Furthermore, he explains how the native speakers will still be more proficient and more fluent in their
language, but says that natives should be more careful with some instances of how they use the language.
The video goes on to explain how its beneficial for the English language to be used as a universally used
language, then it’s explained how the English language compares to other global languages such as Chinese
and Spanish.

I found the interview interesting because it explains to viewers how the language can be both virtually and
practically useful for foreigners and native users in both everyday uses and business. Overall, if you take
few notes from this video you can understand even better how language is used globally and how it
eventually changes and evolves with the world.
