TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW
You don't have to understand the whole process. You just need to
meet the one person who will then introduce you to the next
person and the next person and so on.
Continue to take small steps toward your goal every single day.
ALICE ZHENG, MD, MBA, MPH
"The windy path that any one person took is not the right answer
per say."

Finding a job where you have control over your schedule can be
critical in happiness.
You can tailor any career choice to your lifestyle, but you will have
to prioritize what you want in life.

TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW
Communicate with people about what you hope to do because you never
know who is also working on something that can dovetail with what you are
doing.
When building a community, you have the power to create even more
leaders. If you decide to have a "portfolio career" try to find ways in which
the things you are doing are connected.
Competition does not hurt your business. Often, it validates the space you
are in.
Also collaboration with people in a similar space can help mutual followings
grow.
" I have two children, and they are two boys, and I wanted to be a
role model for them. ... that a woman can do just as much as any
man can do."
Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW
Evaluate how many years you anticipate being in your career and map
out your goals according to the time you hope to spend in a certain
space.
Wake up everyday and remember your why to help you guide your
choices throughout the day. Always come from a place of yes.
When asked if you can achieve something, come from a place a yes. Be
resourceful to find a way to tackle any task - use the internet, ask
friends, ask friends of friends.
"okay I didnt get into med school in the US, okay that's fine,..
there's no time to think about the bad."

TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW
Having jobs that you don't love are just as important as jobs that you do love. It
teaches you what you are not meant to do.
Don't be shy, sending cold emails may not have a high return rate, but even one
response can present you with an opportunity.
If you are unsure of what you want to do, explore volunteer opportunities to gain
both knowledge about yourself as well as enhance your resume.
If you're interested in an MPH, it may be helpful to know what area of public
health you want to focus on so you can tailor your graduate education to that.
If you are already working somewhere and want a more permanent position there,
nurture the relationship early with who you want to work for.
Spend time communicating what you hope for so that the organization you want to
work for can create a role for you.
When working in the nonprofit space you must investigate if your solution is
actually solving the problem. This is especially essential if you are not deeply
familiar with the core needs of the populations you are trying to help.
Make 3 hypothesis about where you think you would be happiest in your career.
After writing each one down, write down one way you can test each hypothesis in
the next 12 months.
JESSICA SHEPHERD, MD, MBA
" My end goal is always to leave this earth a better place than when
I got here."
Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW
If you have always seen yourself doing something, stay on the path of
doing what you love.
If you chase excellence, success will come.
When you want a certain type of job that is highly coveted, you need to
meet your potential employer where they are.
Don't let your ideas of what you think they want to influence you.
Consistency and training (10,000 hours to be an expert in reference to
the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell ).
Identify a time, if any, that you have not been consistent in achieving
your goals.
How can you overcome those barriers or perceived barriers in your next
endeavor?
KATIE MARKS - COGAN, MD
"It was lot of preparing, and a lot of hard work... preparing for
Shark Tank."
Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW
Don't let what someone says mean something more than it actually
means.
Remember that one test, one score, one unsuccessful partnership does
not predict the way the rest of your life is going to be unless you start
writing that story.
Take every opportunity that's presented to you and figure out what
you really love to do. Sometimes, things may surprise you.
List a time when you have taken something to mean more than it means
and how it has negatively affected you. For example, if you get a bad
score or grade on something, have you possibly said in your mind, "I am
not smart enough to be in the career of my dreams." ?
POOJA GOEL, MD

TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW
In the beginning of building something, emulate people and brands that you know
and like. Follow in their footsteps at first in terms of what they are doing right. As
you start to build, start to focus on differentiation. Determine what you can do
differently, how you can differentiate yourself.
If you are working to get into graduate school - what aspects of current students can
you emulate, such as good scores and good grades, then ask yourself, what makes
you unique?
For anyone who is looking to build a brand or are looking to switch careers?
Who is someone that has a career you admire? What can you emulate and then, how
can you differentiate?
If you have parts of yourself that you want to mold into one career, try to reverse
engineer how that would look.
Can you envision an outcome where your career incorporates all the elements of
what you want to do? Map out the 5 critical steps that can get you to that outcome.
TANIKA GRAY VALBRUN
Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW
Remember that each person has a unique story. While some people
may go through similar experiences, each person has a unique
elements to their story that can be impactful.
Also, remember that you can pitch stories on social media platforms.
Use Tanika's "Make the flyer" motto to have the motivation to execute.
PINKEY PATEL, PHARM D
Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW
When you try something that feels good to you, think of ways you can
pursue it more formally.
Remember that we often only see the most recent years of someone's
success.
Map out the journey that you have had thus far in the space you are
currently in.
How many more years do you think you need to put in in order to
achieve success?
NEELA SETHI, MD
Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW
Relationships should be two ways. If you feel that you are giving
and giving, you probably are.
There's no right way to start a business. You need to get the ball
rolling. Take the leap!
ONA UTUAMA, MD, MPH
Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW
Make sure the things that you are missing are not those that truly
matter.
Name 3 ways that you are unique from anyone else around you.
CARRIE SIUBUTT, MBA
" I kept on being reminded of the time when I was having brain
surgery.. if I could ever walk again.... I want to dedicate my life to
health and wellness"
Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW
Use every failure to evaluate what you could have done better.
Have a plan in place if you fail, what will you do next? How will
you learn from this? How can this failure open up a door for you?
You can only do 3 to 5 things in a year really really well. If you try
to take on too much you could be setting yourself up for failure.
Identify a failure you have had and write down what you can learn
from it.
