"You can believe all sorts of things, but until you've communicated
that to someone you haven't started a movement."

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

You can outsource many tasks for starting your first

entrepreneurship venture.

Sources like 99 designs and HR companies can help you in your

initial stages so you don't have to pay for full-time HR staff or
designers.

Have conversations with people in the space.

You haven't built a brand, until you put it out there.

Use the written word to let others know your mission.

You must put yourself out there.

DANA NORTHCRAFT, JD
"I think it's really persistence; nevertheless she persisted."

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

Places to volunteer for reproductive health care interest:

Planned Parenthood
Activist Council
attend fundraisers
ask to buy someone coffee
ask to help someone with their own work in reproductive
health
Being involved inherently opens doors for opportunities because
you are the first to know about them.
Understand your own privilege, work on yourself and become a
better ally.
Join the Boards of organizations that align with your passion.

Recognize a time (if any) when you have felt privileged.

KATIE DEMING, MD
"You may be the person that is uniquely qualified in this way to
solve a problem."

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

You don't have to understand the whole process. You just need to
meet the one person who will then introduce you to the next
person and the next person and so on.

On achieving balance: Be 100% in the present task that you are

doing! It is the accumulation of many little steps that leads to huge
tasks being accomplished.

Continue to take small steps toward your goal every single day.
ALICE ZHENG, MD, MBA, MPH

"The windy path that any one person took is not the right answer
per say."

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

You don't need to have multiple degrees to land a job in healthcare

consulting. Having an MD, an MBA, or an MPH can help you in
certain ways, but it's not necessary.

Do not get an MD to become a healthcare consultant! Identify the 3

paths to a career in healthcare consulting.

Talk to people in each career choice and do informational

interviews,

Consider getting an additional degree if you don't have a network

in the space you want to work in,

The skills needed to succeed in consulting is different than

medicine and other careers; talk to people in the space to learn
more on that!
PAMELA MEHTA, MD
I decided that I wanted to have a little bit more control over my
own life."

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

Lateral movement in medicine is very difficult, so you may have to

focus on the endpoint until you can move on to the next position
or job.

Exhibit confidence but do not be overly prideful about something

you do not understand.

Finding a job where you have control over your schedule can be
critical in happiness.

You can tailor any career choice to your lifestyle, but you will have
to prioritize what you want in life.

Always set goals - in your personal and professional life!

ANDREA PAUL, MD
" I dont remember any women in the room other than me."

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

When building a new team or starting a new project, find team

members who have backgrounds in what you're doing.

Even within your own institution or current workplace, you can

try to improve inefficiencies.

As teams grow to larger sizes, finding a way to work with different

personalities is important in scaling.

Be open to hiring experts and also be open to learning things

yourself.
HALA SABRY, DO, MBA
"Just show up; Just show up... by you being on tv; all those little
girls watching... Your impact is more than the story."

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

Communicate with people about what you hope to do because you never
know who is also working on something that can dovetail with what you are
doing.

If you embark on the journey of creating a community, you need to think

about the specific goals of the community and you need to think about what
will happen with the group if you decide you do not want to run it anymore.

When building a community, you have the power to create even more
leaders. If you decide to have a "portfolio career" try to find ways in which
the things you are doing are connected.

Competition does not hurt your business. Often, it validates the space you
are in.

Also collaboration with people in a similar space can help mutual followings
grow.

Learn how to manage your mindset.

SONIA PATEL, PHARM D

" I have two children, and they are two boys, and I wanted to be a
role model for them. ... that a woman can do just as much as any
man can do."

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

Learning communication skills as well as some basic business acumen

are vital basics to the startup world no matter which background you
come from.

Evaluate how many years you anticipate being in your career and map
out your goals according to the time you hope to spend in a certain
space.

Always remember your why with any career choice.

Wake up everyday and remember your why to help you guide your
choices throughout the day. Always come from a place of yes.

When asked if you can achieve something, come from a place a yes. Be
resourceful to find a way to tackle any task - use the internet, ask
friends, ask friends of friends.

You can achieve anything if you have confidence in being able to

uncover the solution.
PAOLA PORTELA, MD, MHA

"okay I didnt get into med school in the US, okay that's fine,..
there's no time to think about the bad."

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

Do not dwell on the negatives in life. Life is hard.

The toughest journeys are often the most rewarding ones.

Remember to cultivate your relationships along the way and enjoy

the journey.

Write down an instance where you have been better off for
overcoming something very difficult.
ANN MOND JOHNSON, MBA, MHA

“We (also) have an opportunity and an obligation to use technology

to fix the disparities.”

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

Work for someone who isn't intimidated by smart, strong people.

If your boss is not supportive of helping you grow, your career
potential could be stifled.
On the path to becoming a CEO, it's more important to be motivated
than to be smart.
Healthcare is 1/5 of the US Economy so there's ample opportunity to
make a difference and make a career in this space.
In business and negotiation, always use sugar over vinegar. Remember
that anytime you are trying to get something done, try to approach it
from a positive approach.

Write down 3 areas of healthcare that you think can be improved. Try to
be as specific as possible.
KARIMA LADANI, MPH, PHD

"Take a moment to acknowledge that there is a great opportunity

at your footsteps."

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

Having jobs that you don't love are just as important as jobs that you do love. It
teaches you what you are not meant to do.
Don't be shy, sending cold emails may not have a high return rate, but even one
response can present you with an opportunity.
If you are unsure of what you want to do, explore volunteer opportunities to gain
both knowledge about yourself as well as enhance your resume.
If you're interested in an MPH, it may be helpful to know what area of public
health you want to focus on so you can tailor your graduate education to that.
If you are already working somewhere and want a more permanent position there,
nurture the relationship early with who you want to work for.
Spend time communicating what you hope for so that the organization you want to
work for can create a role for you.
When working in the nonprofit space you must investigate if your solution is
actually solving the problem. This is especially essential if you are not deeply
familiar with the core needs of the populations you are trying to help.

Take advantadge of pro bono lawyers.

Make 3 hypothesis about where you think you would be happiest in your career.
After writing each one down, write down one way you can test each hypothesis in
the next 12 months.
JESSICA SHEPHERD, MD, MBA

" My end goal is always to leave this earth a better place than when
I got here."

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

If you have always seen yourself doing something, stay on the path of
doing what you love.
If you chase excellence, success will come.
When you want a certain type of job that is highly coveted, you need to
meet your potential employer where they are.
Don't let your ideas of what you think they want to influence you.
Consistency and training (10,000 hours to be an expert in reference to
the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell ).

Identify a time, if any, that you have not been consistent in achieving
your goals.

What were 2 barriers that kept you from being consistent?

How can you overcome those barriers or perceived barriers in your next
endeavor?
KATIE MARKS - COGAN, MD

"It was lot of preparing, and a lot of hard work... preparing for
Shark Tank."

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

Don't let what someone says mean something more than it actually
means.

When we have imposter syndrome, it is easy to give meaning to

something in a negative light that doesn't deserve meaning.

Remember that one test, one score, one unsuccessful partnership does
not predict the way the rest of your life is going to be unless you start
writing that story.

Take every opportunity that's presented to you and figure out what
you really love to do. Sometimes, things may surprise you.

List a time when you have taken something to mean more than it means
and how it has negatively affected you. For example, if you get a bad
score or grade on something, have you possibly said in your mind, "I am
not smart enough to be in the career of my dreams." ?
POOJA GOEL, MD

"Envision an outcome where it all comes together."

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

In the beginning of building something, emulate people and brands that you know
and like. Follow in their footsteps at first in terms of what they are doing right. As
you start to build, start to focus on differentiation. Determine what you can do
differently, how you can differentiate yourself.

If you are working to get into graduate school - what aspects of current students can
you emulate, such as good scores and good grades, then ask yourself, what makes
you unique?

For anyone who is looking to build a brand or are looking to switch careers?

Who is someone that has a career you admire? What can you emulate and then, how
can you differentiate?

If you have parts of yourself that you want to mold into one career, try to reverse
engineer how that would look.

Can you envision an outcome where your career incorporates all the elements of
what you want to do? Map out the 5 critical steps that can get you to that outcome.
TANIKA GRAY VALBRUN

"Envision an outcome where it all comes together."

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

Remember that each person has a unique story. While some people
may go through similar experiences, each person has a unique
elements to their story that can be impactful.

A key element to being an advocate for yourself in healthcare and

other aspects of your life is that you are the best spokesperson for
your body and your life.

If you want to pursue a career in journalism, remember that the core

is to be true to raising other people's voices and to uncover untruths.

Also, remember that you can pitch stories on social media platforms.

Use Tanika's "Make the flyer" motto to have the motivation to execute.
PINKEY PATEL, PHARM D

"Whenever you have a vision, whenever you start something; it

never ends up like that; it evolves 700 times."

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

When you try something that feels good to you, think of ways you can
pursue it more formally.

There are times when gaining certifications and more formal

knowledge can help you solidify your foothold in a particular space.

Remember that we often only see the most recent years of someone's
success.

Book Recommendation: Grit by Angela Duckworth

Map out the journey that you have had thus far in the space you are
currently in.

How many more years do you think you need to put in in order to
achieve success?
NEELA SETHI, MD

“Just start, build your dream.”

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

Learning self care is important to help with aspects with your

career. In order to stay focused through the negative aspects of a
career, employ self care and also buildling community.

Relationships should be two ways. If you feel that you are giving
and giving, you probably are.

If you feel that way you need to communicate it. Creating

boundaries is important in the aspect of self care and keeping
protected time for yourself.

There's no right way to start a business. You need to get the ball
rolling. Take the leap!
ONA UTUAMA, MD, MPH

“Don’t let anyone tell you ‘no.’”

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

Find ways to personalize your application to college, graduate school

or a job. Find the schools's mission statement and tailor your personal
statement to match that.

Be disciplined in your approach to getting things done. You may have

to miss things in parts of your life to attain certain successes in your
career.

Make sure the things that you are missing are not those that truly
matter.

Be sure to mention aspects in your application that make you stand

out. Being unique is helpful in a world full of noise so that you are
memorable.

Name 3 ways that you are unique from anyone else around you.
CARRIE SIUBUTT, MBA
" I kept on being reminded of the time when I was having brain
surgery.. if I could ever walk again.... I want to dedicate my life to
health and wellness"

Notes
TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE INTERVIEW

Use every failure to evaluate what you could have done better.

Have a plan in place if you fail, what will you do next? How will
you learn from this? How can this failure open up a door for you?

You can only do 3 to 5 things in a year really really well. If you try
to take on too much you could be setting yourself up for failure.

Identify a failure you have had and write down what you can learn
from it.
